Die architektonische Form des Zentralbaues und die Entwurfsmethode Albertis führten zu großen Problemen bei der Umsetzung des Projekts. Die Studie versucht, einige der Rätsel zu lösen, die sowohl der von Anton…io Labacco überlieferte Entwurf wie auch das Bauwerk selbst bis heute aufgeben. Detaillierte Analysen der Dokumente zur Baugeschichte und der theoretischen Vorgaben Albertis ermöglichen eine Revision der Baugeschichte und eine Rekonstruktion der Zahlen, Maße und Maßbeziehungen, die der Künstler seinem Entwurf für San Sebastiano zugrunde legte. Aus diesen Zahlen kann schließlich auch die von Alberti vermutlich beabsichtigte symbolische Bedeutung des Gebäudes abgelesen werden: Sie steht in unmittelbarem Zusammenhang mit dem Auftraggeber Ludovico Gonzaga und der Stadt Mantua, in der Albertis templum gebaut wurde.
