Each issue contains an insightful Agee's column on film in which he reviews at least one major release, including The Rainbow" (Russian film), "To Have and Have Not", "Hail the Conquering Hero", Zanuck's "Wilson", Selznick's "Since You Went Away", "The Silent VIllage', and "Lost Angel". Of special note is a letter to the editor by W.H. Auden in the Nov 18th issue in which Auden sings high praise of Agee's film criticism: "In my opinion, his column is the most remarkable regular event in American journalism today". Also, a review by Auden of the book "Children of Abraham" by Waldo Frank (Sep 23, 1944). Other notables include Diana Trilling's essay on Katherine Anne Porter (Sep 23), "The Cross of Gold" and "The Future of PAC" by I.F. Stone (July 15 and Nov 4), a letter by T.S. Eliot on Kipling's (assumed by Lionel Trilling) anti-Semitism (Jan 15) with response by Trilling and "Skeleton Key to Joyce" by Louise Bogan. Also, drama reviews by Joseph Wood Krutch. These 7 issues provide a wealth of good reading and excellent portrait of America in 1944.
