Michael Bohnen debütierte 1910 am Stadttheater Düsseldorf und war hernach am Hoftheater Wiesbaden zu hören, ehe er 1912 an die Hofoper Berlin verpflichtet wurde. Seit 1914 regelmäßig bei den Wagner-Festspielen in Bayreuth mitwirkend, trat Bohnen…seit 1922 an der Metropolitan Opera in New York und 1933/34 in Buenos Aires auf. 1935 kehrte er nach Berlin zurück, sang an der Staatsoper, 193545 am Deutschen Opernhaus und war nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis 1947 Intendant der Städtischen Oper Berlin (an der er noch bis 1951 sang) sowie Präsident der Kammer der Kunstschaffenden. Bohnen war vor allem als Wagner-Sänger und Interpret italienischer und französischer Opern berühmt, sang zahlreiche Operettenpartien, übernahm Filmrollen und schrieb Zwischen Kulissen und Kontinenten' (1954)" (DBE). Das Amt als Intendant der Städtischen Oper Berlin mußte er wegen einer gezielten Falschaussage seines Schülers, des Tenors Hans Beirer, im Zuge des Entnazifizierungsverfahrens aufgeben. In Folge dessen fand eine Rehabilitation (trotz des schon bald erfolgten Nachweises der Lüge des Tenors) nur zögerlich statt, so daß Michael Bohnen, lediglich mit einem schmalen Sold der Stadt Berlin versehen, in völliger Armut starb" (Wikipedia, Abfrage v. 11.
