EERSTE HARDDRAVERIJ PURMEREND Aquatint vervaardigd door Pieter van der Meulen naar een tekening van Cornelis Bok, uitgegeven door J.P. Bronstring in 1821. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd, met latere toevoegingen. Afm. 32,5 x 52 cm. Op 24 augustus 1820 werd in opdracht van Burgemeester en Wethouders van Purmerend een harddraverij uitgeschreven, dit ter gelegenheid van de verjaardag van Koning Willem I. Begerenswaardig waren de prijzen voor de eerste en tweede plaats. Respectievelijk waren dit een massief gouden zweep en zilveren sporen. Een jaar later werd voor de eerste prijs opnieuw een massief gouden zweep ter beschikking gesteld en voor de tweede prijs een massief zilveren zweep. De draverijen werden gelopen op het begin van de Zuiderweg en de Zuidoostbeemster (dus net buiten de stad). Van enige regelmaat in harddraverijen was toen nog geen sprake. Er werd niet op een vaste datum gereden en jaren werden overgeslagen. In 1873 wordt de Purmerender Harddraverij Vereniging opgericht die tegenwoordig in samenwerking met de stichting Nederlandse Draf- en Rensport het jaarlijkse evenement op de tweede donderdag in september organiseert.
