Octavo (21.8x15 cm), five volumes, 106 plates with black and white illustrations, 47 facsimiles, 14 maps (some folded), original blue cloth, spine panels stamped in gold, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. First edition. A major compilation of original source material on the Spanish exploration and colonization of Alta California. "For the two Anza expeditions thirteen diaries were kept, of which only two have been printed in any language. In addition, Father Garcés wrote a brief account of the first journey which is essentially another diary. Of these fourteen documents twelve are printed here for the first time and one is reprinted. Besides the thirteen diaries of the Anza expeditions I have included a journal by Father Palóu recording the exploration of San Francisco Bay made by himself and Rivera to look for mission sites. This journey was a link between the two Anza expeditions and Palóu's account belongs with the Anza diaries. The documentary story is completed by including accounts of the founding of San Francisco by Father Palóu and Lieutenant Moraga, and by adding to the three volumes containing these diaries a whole volume of hitherto unpublished correspondence" (preface, pp. xiii-xiv). "Monumental work containing translations of the original MS. diaries of Anza, Diaz, Garcés, Font and Palóu relating to the 1773 and 1774 expeditions and the founding of both Monterey and San Francisco" (Howes). "A work of extensive research and of most important historical value" (Cowan). Cowan (1933), p. 60. Farquhar, The Books of the Colorado River & the Grand Canyon 7c. Hill, p. 29. Howes B583. Powell, California Classics 1. Zamorano Eighty 7. The first volume has a bit of wear along the lower edges and several faint spots to the rear panel, the other volumes are fine in printed dust jackets which are chipped and tanned. (#165959).
