Otherwise, a near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in very slightly creased and edgeworn dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Uncommon in this original hardcover issue. It focuses on the 'heroic era' of helicopter development, documenting the visionaries and precursors who attempted to solve the complex physics of rotary-wing flight. The volume is richly illustrated with black and white and color iconographic documentation, including historical photographs and illustrations by Jean Noël. As Bombeau was a prominent test pilot, the text includes technical insights into early designs like the Gyroplane Breguet-Richet No. 1, which achieved one of the first piloted vertical lifts in 1907.
