All edges, end papers and paste downs marbled. Numerous illustrations by Richard "Dickie" Doyle (1824-1883), John Leech (1817-1864), Alfred Henry Forrester (1804-1872), known under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill, who were all well-known for their illustrations for Punch. William Edmondstoune Aytoun (1813-1865) and Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909) were both Scottish poets. In around 1841, they became acquainted, and together they wrote a series of humorous articles on the fashions and follies of the time, in which were interspersed the verses which afterwards became popular as the Bon Gaultier Ballads (1855). A scarce auction catalogue jointly compiled by Constantin (1755-1816) and Henry (1766-1836). The announced owner, l'Espinasse de Langeac (d. 1814), was a minor dealer whose stock had constituted large portions of anonymous sales in 1808 and 1809. This is the final dispersal linked to him. This catalogue contains 333 lots of paintings, drawings, prints, decorative arts, sculpture, and furniture. Among the varied array of pictures (lots 1-267), we find the work of Weenix, A. Bega, A. Bloemaert, Fabritius, Mieirs, Cuyp, L. Bakhuizen, B. van der Helst, Veronese, van den Eeckhout, C. Le Brun, Largillière, Steen, Hoet, Matsys, Gentileschi, Lairesse, Kalf, etc., etc. The majority of the entries have concise descriptions and technical notes. In fine condition. The scarce catalogue of an auction directed by Bon-Thomas Henry (1766-1836), first a painter, then a respected dealer and tasteful collector. The supposed consigner "La Baronne de V***ez," was very probably fictitious. This sale, consisting mostly of Northern pictures, offered 76 lots of paintings and 11 lots of engraved stones. Henry has contributed informative descriptions for most of the pictures. Attributed here to P. de Hooch, lot 36, now at the Frick, is today credited to Hendrik van der Burgh.
