During the later years of the conflict the French government relied heavily on domestic bond drives to finance military operations and sustain the war economy. Artists and illustrators were frequently commissioned to create visually striking posters that linked patriotic imagery with the financial participation of civilians. Besnard, a prominent French painter and illustrator associated with academic and decorative art in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, contributed to this visual campaign by producing imagery that connected victory on the battlefield with the protection of French families at home.
