Souscrivez pour hâter la Paix par la Victoire. Poster illustrated by Paul Albert Besnard and issued in France in 1917 during the First World War to promote public subscription to government war loans. During the later years of the conflict the French government relied heavily on domestic bond drives to finance military operations and sustain the war economy. Artists and illustrators were frequently commissioned to create visually striking posters that linked patriotic imagery with the financial participation of civilians. Besnard, a prominent French painter and illustrator associated with academic and decorative art in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, contributed to this visual campaign by producing imagery that connected victory on the battlefield with the protection of French families at home. Souscrivez pour hâter la Paix par la Victoire. France, 1917. Large illustrated lithographic poster designed by Albert Besnard. The composition presents the allegorical figure of winged Victory raising a sword while standing protectively above a mother and child, a symbolic representation of the nation defended through collective wartime effort. The printed slogan calls upon the public to subscribe to the war loan with the message "Souscrivez pour hâter la Paix par la Victoire," translated as "Subscribe to hasten peace through victory." The imagery and text combine patriotic symbolism with the financial appeal central to wartime bond campaigns. War bond posters formed a major element of visual propaganda across Europe during the First World War, when governments turned to mass public investment campaigns to finance prolonged industrial warfare. French poster artists produced powerful allegorical imagery designed to link economic participation with national survival and ultimate victory. Posters such as this illustrate how art and graphic design were mobilized to influence civilian behavior on the home front and to reinforce the connection between military success and popular financial support. Large format poster measuring approximately 31 x 44 inches. Fold marks present with minor edge chipping and several neat tissue repairs to the reverse, primarily along the margins. Overall good plus condition with strong color and clear printed image.
