Paperback. Condition: New. A Reader of Classical Arabic Literature is one of a very small group of resources in English for the teaching of intermediate and advanced level classical Arabic. Based on his lecture notes, the late Seeger Bonebakker designed a superb teaching text, which he then asked his UCLA colleague, Michael Fishbein, to help him annotate and augment. The result is a truly valuable reader, one used widely in the United States and Europe, featuring judicious and instructive selections from such works as Ibn al-Qifti's Inbah al-ruwat, al-Tanukhi's al-Faraj ba'd al-shidda, and al-Dhahabi's Siyar a'lam al-nubala', among others.

Paperback. Condition: VERY GOOD. X, 80, 17, 162 p. [Publications de la 'Fondation de Goeje', 17]. 8vo, sewn binding in printed wraps. 80-page introduction in English, critical text in Arabic. Wrappers a bit worn, text clean and sound. 'The Criticism of Poetry' by Qud?ma b. Ga far, an Arab scholar of Christian ancestry who flourished in Bagdad at the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth century of the Moslem era (the ninth and tenth centuries of the Christian era) 1. The first edition of this work was printed in Istanbul in 1302, and four reprints of this edition have been published, two in Cairo in 1352 and in I362, and two in Lucknow, India. The book was and still is part of the curriculum of many students of Arabic in Moslem countries and, despite its age, has for them as much interest as any modern book could have. This present edition is based on unpublished manuscripts and on quotations in later works on literary theory which have not previously been used in relation to the text of the Naqd al-Sir. The introduction contains a few details about Qud?ma not included in his biography in the first edition of the Encyclopaedia of Islam, notes on the arrangement of the Nagd al-Sir, its dependence on the works of earlier theorists, the influence of Greek philosophical theories, and the quotations from the Nagd al-Sir found in works of later authors, as well as a description of the manuscripts on which this edition is based.' (From the introduction) 'Dr. Bonebakker has now given us a careful critical edition of Qudama's genuine Naqd Al-Si'r by collating the four extant manuscripts and taking into account the editio princeps of Istanbul 1302. He has enhanced the value of this task by prefixing to his text a detailed study of the life and authentic writings of Qudama, including a discussion of his relation to earlier literary theorists and the influence of Greek philosophy on his critique of poetry.' (A. J. Arberry in Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, 1957).
