Primera edición. Descripción física: Octavo menor (16 x 11 cm). Anteportada, portada, 12 hojas, 479 páginas. Encuadernación plena…piel de época con tejuelo y dorados en el lomo. Conservación: Muy buen estado. Revisado completo. Biografía del autor: Jaime Bonells (Cervera, Lérida, c. 1751 p. s. XIX) fue un médico, impulsor de las academias científicas. En Madrid llegó a ser médico de cámara de los duques de Alba y debido a su situación privilegiada no fue obligado durante años a revalidar su grado de doctor en Medicina ante el Tribunal del Protomedicato castellano. Un nieto suyo, José Costa y Bonells, Pepito, fue inmortalizado por Goya en 1813. La duquesa fue la destinataria de la dedicatoria que Bonells hizo de una de sus obras más conocidas, Perjuicios que acarrean al género humano las madres que rehúyen criar a sus hijos [.] (1786). En ella defiende la lactancia materna frente a la mercenaria en los primeros meses de vida, apoyándose en argumentos médicos procedentes de la más ortodoxa tradición hipocrático-galénica sobre la idoneidad de la leche materna por proceder de la misma sangre de la que se ha generado el niño y también en argumentos éticos. El contenido del texto hay que entenderlo en el contexto del Siglo de las Luces, en el que se hace evidente la preocupación por la elevadísima mortalidad infantil y se señalan explícitamente las ventajas económicas que reportaría al Estado la adopción de medidas de protección de la salud en esas etapas de la vida, con argumentos demográficos a los que eran sensibles las monarquías ilustradas.
