The ground-breaking 'Parallèlement', Ambroise Vollard's first book, Verlaine's verse illustrated with Pierre Bonnard's delicate rose lithographs, in the original wrappers. From the edition limited to 200 numbered copies, with this one of 170 on vélin de Hollande. This copy was issued with the second version of the wrapper and title, with the vignette of the Imprimerie Nationale replaced with a vignette by Bonnard himself for each, after the privilège was withdrawn on the discovery that 'Parallèlement' was libidinous and erotic verse by a decadent Symbolist and not, as had been thought, a mathematical text. The initial privilège granted to the book was printed on the verso of an initial leaf and was replaced after its withdrawal with an original lithograph by Bonnard printed in a slightly darker colour than the lithographs that illustrate the text. This copy, stitched as issued in the original wrappers, has had some minor repairs to the spine edges and the first leaf of text ('Dédicace') does feature a stain (it appears to be the artefact of a thin inserted item), however, it remains a very good copy overall. 'An epoch-making book .'. (The Artist & the Book 1860 - 1960). 'Le modernité de Bonnard y est mise en opposition à la typographie, utilisant un caractère d'imprimerie ancien, le Garamond roman de 1540. Le vélin de Hollande, papier préféré de Vollard avant qu'il ne découvre plus tard le Montval, fut spécialement filigrané au titre du livre .Bonnard choisit le ton rose des lithographies dont le tirage fut réalisé par Clot . Il existe deux couvertures et deux pages de titre, selon une histoire répandue par Vollard pour remplacer la vignette de l'Imprimerie Nationale par un dessin de Bonnard reproduit, en raison de l'opposition de milieux officiels de la République de voir le nom de l'Imprimerie Nationale associé d'un recueil 'licencieux' . Le seul véritabel écho dans la presse fut celui d'Alfred Jarry dans la 'Revue Blanche' le 15.2.1901: ' . nulles rêveries, fussent-elles d'un bibliophile, ne suggèraient la beauté et la grâce qui réalisent les lithographies de Bonnard. Ses crayonnages légers dans les marges semblent les propres fantômes qui s'évoquent des rythmes à mesure de la lecture, assez diaphanes pour ne point empêcher de lire. C'est la première illustration que l'on publie, qui soit tout à fait adaptée à un livre de vers'.' (De Parallèlement à Chanson Complète). 'It is hardly surprising that Ambroise Vollard thought of Bonnard to illustrate Verlaine's Parallèlement. He knew already the artist's drawings for Marie; and he had seen the painting Indolence, a drawing of which is actually included in this work . Bonnard invented a very free style of composition to complement Verlaine's poems; the lithographs stray into and around the verses themselves and curve out again into the margins, voluptuous and tender images whose powers of suggestion miraculously enhance the poet's art.' 'Vollard who was the friend of all the best painters of his day, spared nothing in his efforts to publish Verlaine's Parallèlement in a magnificent edition: an imposing format, impressive lithographs, the large and elegant Garamond italic type, recently recast by the Imprimerie Nationale; and finally, the prominent role played by the illustrations. On each page, the tender and sensual lithographs . overflow their bounderies and pour into the margins.

Original publisher's printed wrappers with reproduction manuscript title and small lithograph vignette (the head of a baby) to front cover. Charles Terrasse's musical scores with Bonnard's lithograph illustrations - one of his earliest works - together with the exceptionally rare signed suite on Chine. The exceptionally rare suite of the 19 prints printed without text and with each image signed by Bonnard with his initials, in brush, either in scarlet or blue. There were only some 20 copies printed of these proofs, all on sheets of Chine paper and without text. Terrasse's music for children. Illustrated by Bonnard, this is one of his earliest illustrative projects and has been cited as his first, although the listing of 'Petit Solfège Illustré' on the list of published works makes it clear that that work precedes this. Terrasse had married Bonnard's sister Andrée in 1890, so it appears natural that he should choose his brother-in-law to illustrate the work. Bonnard, Terrasse and Alfred Jarry later established the 'Théâtre des Pantins' together in 1898. [ ].

Very good plus to near fine copy enclosed in a custom clamshell box. Charles Boyer starred in the original 1924 Paris premiere of the play and obviously formed a close bond with the author Claude Roger-Marx. Boyer earned a degree in philosophy at the Sorbonne before turning to a career as an actor. His first big Hollywood break was a very small part of a chauffeur to Jean Harlow in Red-Headed Woman (1932), and he went on to appear in a French adaptation of Liliom directed by the great Fritz Lang. This lead to other memorable roles in such classic films as Private Worlds, Shanghai, The Garden of Allah, All This and Heaven Too, Gaslight, Algiers, Fanny, Cluny Brown, Arch of Triumph, The First Legion, Conquest, Around the World in Eighty Days, Barefoot in the Park, etc. He was nominated for four Best Actor Oscars for his work in Conquest (1937)Algiers (1938), Gaslight (1944), Fanny (1961), and in 1943 he received an Honorary Oscar Certificate for his progressive cultural achievement in establishing the French Research Foundation in Los Angeles as a source of reference. In 1950, he appeared on Broadway in one of his most notable roles, that of Don Juan, in a dramatic reading of the third act of George Bernard Shaw's Man and Superman (popularly known as ÔDon Juan in HellÕ), and in 1952, he won a Special Tony Award for that performance. He also enjoyed success on the small screen, appearing in Four Star Playhouse (1952-1956), on the rather short-lived but critically acclaimed series, The Rogues, with David Niven and Gig Young, and in a favorite episode of I Love Lucy entitled ÔLucy Meets Charles Boyer.Õ.

Le chef-d'oeuvre de Boylesve décrit les jeux amoureux des occupants d'un château alors qu'une enfant, qui grandit au fil du roman, se pose en spectatrice innocente de toutes ces scènes sans que ne soient affectés à ses yeux le rôle et l'expression du sentiment amoureux. Selon Pierre Joulia, Boylesve allie dans ce roman la truculence de Rabelais à l'esprit d'analyse de Voltaire. Mailing card, 105 x 150 mm, the verso with an autograph signed note in violet ink in the hand of Pierre Bonnard, arranging a meeting with his gallerist, Paul Brame, in Cannes on the coming Wednesday afternoon; the front has an imprinted stamp with the bust of Marshal Pétain, head… of the Vichy government, and is addressed (again in Bonnard's hand, with the same pen) 'M[onsieu]r Brame, 12 avenue V' (i.e. Avenuede Valescure,Saint-Raphaël); there is no postmark - the card must have been delivered by hand on Bonnard's behalf; very fine condition. In the last two decades of his life, Bonnard's studio and residence were at the Villa du Bosquet in Le Cannet, just 3km north of Cannes; at the time he wrote this card to Paul Brame, the art dealer was based inSaint-Raphaël, approximately 40km to the west of Cannes.
