Small folio. (334 x 268 mm). [156 leaves; 151 leaves (suite); pp. x, 294, (i), (i)]. Half-title with justification verso, printed title with vignette by Bonnard, 3 leaves with 'Préface du Traducteur' and Longus' text illustrated with 156 original lithographs by Bonnard printed in black, leaf with 'Table des Matières', final leaf with achevé d'imprimer; also included in a separate volume with a separate wrapper is the complete series - three leaves with a lithograph recto and verso and one leaf with the two final lithographs recto - of lithographs printed in 'ton rose'. Full aubergine crushed morocco by Noulhac with his signature gilt for each vol., banded spines with gilt titles in six compartments, turn-ins ruled in gilt with decorative Greek key roll-tool border and floral ornaments at corners, green silk doublures and endleaves, marbled endpapers, original publisher's printed wrappers with titles and Bonnard's vignette in black to front cover and and backstrip for each vol. preserved, a.e.g. A very rare example of Bonnard's superb second book with Vollard, one of ten from the édition de tête on Japon ancien, with the additional suite and in a contemporary binding by Noulhac. From the edition limited to 250 numbered copies, with this one of 10 copies on japon ancien à la forme from the édition de tête with the additional suite of the lithographs printed without text in 'ton rose'. The édition de tête of ten copies of 'Daphnis et Chloé' is extremely rare: we know only of one other copy, that formerly in a Swiss private collection cited in 'De Parallèlement à Chanson Complète'. We locate no other examples at auction or in public or private collections. The only known work of the Greek Longus, Daphnis and Chloe, has appealed to numerous artists and illustrators: Pierre Bonnard (1902), Sylvain Sauvage (1925), Aristide Maillol (1937) and Marc Chagall (1961) all produced illustrated editions. The tale - one of the least tragic of the Greek canon - tells of the love of two foundlings raised together, the eponymous hero and heroine, who each harbour an unsuspected love for the other, suffer various reverses of fortune (including Chloe's kidnap by pirates) before a happy resolution for all parties. 'The lithographs, of an unprecedented lightness of touch, have been printed with such subtlety and skill that you seem to see the original crayon, and they, like the text, have that marvellous spontaneity that will remain forever one of Bonnard's greatest gifts.' (J. Guignard, Le Livre, 1942). [see Guignard's 'Le Livre', Paris, 1942; see 'de Parallèlement à Chanson Complète' pp. 23 - 26].…

Condition: Good. 4to. 24.5 x 30cm. [10]. 294, [4]pp.Original wraps in a contemporary half calf chemise with marbled boards in a matching slipcase, repaired. One of 250 numbered copies.Francis Bouvet, The Complete Graphic Work, no. 75; Luc Monod, Manuel., no. 7262; François Chapon, Le Peintre et le livre, pp. 67-68 -- The Artist & the Book 28 -- Rauch 22; OCLC Number / Unique Identifier:54167315.One of the most famous modern illustrated books - copy on hollande paper. Seduced by his first collaboration with Pierre Bonnard on Parallel by Verlaine (1900), Ambroise Vollard commissioned a second one from him, these Pastorales. Where Parallel, with its daring layout and the choice of printing the lithographs in pink, had been disconcerting, the layout of this second book is more classical, the illustration being clearly separated from the text. However, at the time of its publication, it remained "shunned by bibliophiles, who for a long time refused to see it as an appropriate illustration technique for luxury books because it was considered too commercial, even vulgar" (Limited edition. .This judgment has largely been revised by their successors, and the work is today considered one of the greatest successes of the illustrated book. Carteret, Illustrés IV, p. 242: a beautiful work, highly sought after and highly rated. One of the greatest stars of modern books. ; « Like Bonnard's earlier lithographs for Parallèlement and Manet's for Le Corbeau, these subtle plates had little appeal in 1902 for a public that preferred the sharply defined realism of the professional engraver. The book is today considered one of the finest of its period". (The Artist and the Book, n°28) ; Mahé, II, col.

" Antoine Terrasse, Pierre Bonnard, Gallimard 1967."In 1902, Vollard published Daphnis et ChloÈ by Longus; He may have chosen this Greek romance of the third century because it approached so nearly the tone of the modern novel. Illustrated with lithographs by Bonnard, it has been described as one of the most beautiful books published since the eighteenth century. Carefully following the text, conjuring up woodlands, harbors, and pastoral figures, Bonnard's genius portrays with lavishness and antique grace the tranquil atmosphere of the Golden Age. The quality of the printing process, attained with such success in ParallËlement, lingers on in Daphnis et ChloÈ, giving it exceptional charm and nuance. " (Un E. Johnson, Ambroise Vollard Editeur, The Museum of Modern Art, N-Y, 1977) Langue : FranÁais. …
