Paperback. Condition: New. For the first three quarters of the twentieth century, in the heart of our nation, there thrived a safe haven which nurtured great aspirations of thousands of African American youth and their families. "The Sumner Story" highlights the history of a segregated high school which became recognized for the stellar academic performance of its students. Highly qualified faculty who believed in the students' ability to achieve prepared them for a world of competition, hard knocks, compromises and closed doors. The story also denotes and illuminates outstanding career successes of alumni. In a socially and economically segregated nation, black students who had a "Sumner-like" experience were very fortunate because their schools served as clear windows and powerful springboards to promising possibilities. In this regard, nine other segregated high schools are reviewed. Insights can be gained from this story on how to resolve the plight of low-performing schools in socially and economically disadvantaged communities.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 2nd Edition. SICILIAN ROUNDABOUT BY EUGENE BONNER 1962 INSCRIBED HC DJ. Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: This book is a different kind of guide book. For it is mainly, as the title implies, a purely personal record of places visited, or revisited, since World War II, together with some historical notes and a few random reminiscences of the author s earlier travels in this fabled land. And throughout the book there are thumbnail sketches of colorful personalities and diverting incidents. Please find then: Sicilian Roundabout by Eugene Bonner. This large hard cover book (8 ½ x 11 ¼ inches, 234 pages) was published by S.F. Flaccovio, Publisher of Palermo, dated June 1962. The book is warmly inscribed by the Author to the former owners on the front endpaper. The book is bound in beige buckram with embossed gilt titles on the front cover and the spine; it is protected by a pictorial dust jacket and also contained in a cardboard slipcase. There are 44 full-page, b&w plates. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The slipcase is a bit worn and dust-dulled with some small tears and splits but still whole and capable of doing its job. The dust jacket has a small tear on the bottom of the front cover which has been inexpertly repaired with common magic tape. The spine of the dust jacket is also heavily stained with what I imagine are specks of tobacco smoke residue. The only mark I found in the book is the Author s inscription; the interior pages and plates are bright and clean throughout. The hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Language: ENG. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover. This book was published in 1952, based on the author's visit to Sicily in 1950, shortly after World War II. According to the dust jacket, the author wanted to help correct the impression that Sicily was just a mass of rubble after the war. He points out that very few works of antiquity or historical importance were touched during the war. Bonner first spent a winter in Sicily prior to World War I, when he became interested in Sicily's people, myths, legends, and history. This book is not a travel guide, but a compilation of travel sketches, a postwar description of locales, and personal reminiscences of earlier visits. Quarto. 193 pages, including index. Sicilian maps on front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers. Black dust jacket with title in green to front and spine panels, and photo of Mount Etna on front panel. Price-clipped. Travel.
