Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good ++. First Edition. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good ++. 311 (1) pp, acknowledgments, foreword, introduction, bibliographical note and comparison with the Spanish Diplomatic Archives, list of documents, Documents; Appendix: A. Diary of Max von Versen, 18 May - 22 July 1870; B. The Sigmaringen Archives; index. Edited with an Introduction by Georges Bonnin with a foreword by G. P. Gooch. Translated by Isabella M. Massey. First Edition, 1957. "The candidature of a Hohenzollern Prince for the Spanish throne is one of the most celebrated incidents of the nineteenth century and was the immediate cause of the Franco-Prussian War. Among the archives of the German Froeign Office, captured in 1945, are some 300 documents relating to this incident. Thsy are published in this volume for the first time. The story and its sequel are well known, but the documents in the case have been withheld not only from the public but -- with some exceptions -- from the historian's eye. The reasons for this secrecy are stated with startling candour in a thirty-year old Memorandum found and now published with the other documents. Thes documents show the actors at work -- the King of Prussia and Hohenzollern Princes, offficial and secret emissaries in the capitals concerned, and above all Bismarck himself, who was far more closely interested and far more responsible for the turn of events than he ever cared to admit." from the jacket flap. Price clipped. Inked name on ffep. Small chip to top edge front panel corner dj with three minute chips to top edge and a minute closed tear to bottom edge rear panel of same. Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Size: Large 8vo. Book.
