Der Staatsmann und Philosoph Carl Viktor von Bonstetten " ist eine Epochenfigur. Er stand mitten in allen Debatten, die das ausgehende 18. und das frühe 19. Jahrhundert beschäftigt haben: Rousseau-Begeisterung; Entdeckung der Ökonomie; Politik zwischen Reform und Revolution; Erziehung, Freundschaftskult. Einst eine europäische Berühmtheit, war er für lange Jahre im schweizerischen Gedächtnis kein geläufiger Name mehr. Seit kurzem läßt sich wieder zunehmendes Interesse an seiner Person feststellen ." Nach der französischen Invasion 1798 verließ Bonstetten Bern und flüchtete zur Familie Brun nach Kopenhagen. Er begleitete die Schriftstellerin Friederike Brun in den Jahren 1802/1803 nach Rom und zurück. "Bei seiner Rückkehr aus Dänemark hatte Bonstetten erneut den Kontakt zu Coppet gesucht. Briefe der Staël nach Rom vom Februar 1803 zeigen bereits eine freundschaftliche Intimität. Ab Mitte 1803 trug Bonstetten im Salon von Coppet seinen Latium-Reisebericht vor. Er hatte ihn in Rom auf Deutsch verfaßt; doch Madame de Staël bewog ihn, den Text ins Französische zu übersetzen, um sich ein breiteres Publikum zu erschließen. Im Frühling 1804 war das Manuskript beendet, im Herbst erschien bei einem Genfer Verleger der Voyage [?]`. Der Voyage` wurde im französischen wie im deutschen Sprachgebiet lebhaft beachtet. In den Genfer Salons wurde Bonstetten gefeiert. Partien der Schilderung des zeitgenössischen Latium im zweiten Teil wurden von mehreren deutschen Zeitschriften übernommen; bereits ein Jahr später erschien eine integrale deutsche Übersetzung."
