"I have to caution you, this is not a game." - Karlheinz Schreiber, from the rear outer jacket. "A political thriller, a business expose, and the unmasking of an international web of power, money, and influence." - from the rear outer jacket. "A briefcase full of cash is handed to the treasurer of a federal political party, but the donation is never registered on the party's books. A public prosecutor investigates a case that implicates influential business figures, but he dies in a car accident before charges are laid. At the height of the Gulf War, a sale of sophisticated tanks to Saudi Arabia yields millions in secret commissions - almost half the value of the deal - for a network of middlemen. The figure who connects these seemingly unrelated episodes is Karlheinz Schreiber, and name much in the headlines since his arrest in Toronto in August 1999. Charged in Germany with bribery and tax evasion, he is at the center of the most sensational political crisis to erupt in that country since World War II, a scandal that has brought down the country's revered former chancellor Helmut Kohl. But it is in Canada that Schreiber's fortune was made. A tireless dealmaker who cultivated the powerful, he made connections in Ottawa that served the interest of his European patrons and clients. One was Airbus Industrie, a company desperate to break into the North American market by selling its planes to Air Canada. It ws the secret commissions attached to the Air Canada sale - close to $20 million on a $1.8-billion contract - that became the subject of an RCMP investigation, the same investigation that prompted a lawsuit by former prime minister Brian Mulroney. Those commissions were ultimately shared with Schreiber's German amigos and with his Canadian friends. The Last Amigo is about the labyrinth of international political and business alliances that are at the heart of the scandals swirling around Karlheinz Schreiber: how corporations win government contracts, how money is successfully hidden in foreign banks and distributed through coded accounts, how an international political agenda is promoted and financed. It is a tale of media spin, covert influence, and undeniable personal gain. And it is a portrait of a consummate middleman who knew precisely how to exploit the ambitions and vulnerabilities of others." - from the inner front jacket flap.

This is his now classic and irresistibly readable 'personal history' of America, guiding us through centuries of changing life in the US. From the Mayflower to the gold rush, the jazz age to Pearl Harbour, with portraits of figures as varied as Buffalo Bill, John D. Rockefeller and Martin Luther King, here is the American story in all its triumphs and failures, grandeurs and tragedies. It is the defining portrait of a nation." ; A tour of American life and history based on Cooke's television series on the nation's growth and development and illustrated with photographs, cartoons, prints, and paintings. ; wine-colored textured boards with beige spine in color photographic dustjacket ; VG/G. Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Beckman, Ingrid (book design) (illustrator). As new condition white boards/red cloth spine/black spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Acknowledgments; Preface by Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman dated May 2, 1977; Foreword by Nobel Laureate F.A. Hayek; Notes and Index. "This is a brilliant and passionate book by a brilliant and passionate man," writes Milton Friedman. "It is a profound analysis of the suicidal course on which our beloved country is proceeding -- so clearly and so simply written, with such eloquence, such obvious sincerity, such a broad base in recorded fact and personal experience, that it is hard to see how any reasonable man who wishes his fellow citizens well can fail to be persuaded by it." " I can assure the reader," writes F.A. Hayek, "that Mr. Simon is not UNDULY an alarmist. If we learn from him and the few people who think like him, we may still avert the threatening collapse of our political and economic order." With such endorsements from TWO Nobel Prize-winning economists, it is obvious that William E. Simon has written one of the most significant books for our country in this perilous time. In this book, Mr. Simon presents both his personal philosophy and an insider's revealing picture of the Nixon and Ford Administrations. He substantiates his important message with the wider perspective he gained in his stormy Washington years. His aim is to inspire all Americans to a critical awareness of the real and unbreakable connection between economic and political freedom. To lose one is to lose the other. To lose one is to lose the other. And we are losing both, he warns, in the wake of the expanding state. But Mr. Simon does more than warn us, more than reveal the dangers of too much government: he offers a blueprint for a "counter-intelligentsia" to preserve our freedom." -- from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: William E. Simon was Secretary of the Treasury from 1974 to 1977. He also served as Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, 1973-1974, and as CHairman of the Economic Policy Board, the Federal Energy Office, and the East-West FOreign Trade Board. Mr. Simon is now a Senio Advisor to Booz, Allen & Hamilton, Inc. and a Senior Consultant to Blyth Eastman Dillon & Co., Inc. - from the rear inner jacket flap.
