Maps, pictorial maps, black and white wood block print illustrations, 24.5 x 18 x 7.2cm, 358 double folded leaves, string binding, title label upper cover. Some soiling or light abrasion from thumbing to lower corners of many leaves, small chip at lower left and a paper mend at the lower right on other leaves. A good sound copy. This encyclopaedic dictionary was originally published in 1801 and reprinted in 1819. The publication was also known as ??????? [Z?ji shinkoku daisetsuy?], ???????,[Tokaisetsuyouhyakkatsuu], or ?????? [Gazokuruijiryouten] and became very popular during Edo Period among the general public. Over 350 leaves, the book is filled with numerous illustrations and offers large amount of general and historical information. It was used both as a dictionary and an encyclopedia. The book starts with 6 double page maps which feature the world, Japan, Kyoto, Mt Fuji, Ise, Nara and Nikko. Maps of Edo and Osaka are featured at the back. Between those maps, all types of information are packed on every page, including words and their meanings, moral teaching, historical facts and social knowledge.
