Photographs by Boomoon. Essay by Shino Kuraishi. Unpaginated, with 33 black-and-white plates. 13-1/4 x 9-1/8 inches. This first edition was limited to 500 unnumbered copies. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. From the artist: "Naksan, created in February 2010, is characterized by its vertical frame, details in waves and big size. The snowy shore in the lower part of the image is an important element bonding the viewer to the scene. The poet and critic Shino Kuraishi wrote, 'the sea shore, transformed into a uniform, absolute blank by the accumulated snow, looms before the body of the beholder and serves as a platform that blocks the movement of the incoming waves. The shore may be a "stage," but it is entirely anti-theatrical. It has nothing to do with spectacle, of a type that would satisfy the visual desires of the general public. Rather, it is as if the stage was built for one beholder alone. These are photographs for a quiet dialogue with oneself. The vertical frame, and the presence of the absolute blank "stage" at the bottom of the frame, circumscribe and clarify the fact that, at this very moment, the photographer-beholder is witnessing face-on the event taking place in this absolute zone. At the same time, the stage that stands of the side of the beholder becomes overt. In other words, it is a mirror. I confront myself as a landscape.'".

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Photographically illustrated laminated paper-covered boards, no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Boomoon Kwon. 24 pp., with 19 four-color plates, beautifully printed on fine matte art paper. 13 x 17 inches. This first edition was limited to 500 copies. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. From the publisher: "Boomoon's third book with Nazraeli Press, Stargazing at Sokcho comprises 19 dreamlike land- and skyscapes made in the artist's secluded hometown in north-eastern Korea. Resembling nothing so much as the way the skies might look from the inside of a snow-globe, these gorgeous color photographs include hints of Sokcho's soaring granite peaks and dense forests, clear, bitterly cold skies, and an almost audible roar of silent eternity. Boomoon is widely considered one of South Korea's most important contemporary artists. His photographs and films have been shown widely in Asia and Europe, and are included in important collections throughout the world. Stargazing at Sokcho is printed on matte art paper, with a double varnish, in an oversized horizontal format; this first printing is limited to 500 casebound copies.".

From the publisher: "This new monograph on Boo Moon, one of Korea's great contemporary photographers, takes the form of a visual narrative. The book is divided into three sections: Land, Sea, and Sky. The urban landscapes range from stiflingly lush green forests to razed construction sites, all of which succumb to heavy winter snows. Subtle changes in perspective show an ongoing battle between sunlight and clouds over a bottomless sea -- and the camera slowly pulls away to the safety of the sky. Taken from the skies, the final photographs point away from the earth and towards the comfort and terror of infinity. Essays by Taro Amano and Shino Kuraishi." Signed by Author.
