This is a collection of biographies and accounts of the honorary doctorates bestowed by the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, including that of Martin Luther King, Jr., pictured on the cover, prime minister Hendrikus Colijn, Prince Berhard, the liberation theologian Dom Helder Camara, the poet Ernesto Cardenal, and the philosophers Alvin Plantinga and Nicholas Wolterstorff. Between 1930 and 2007, the VU awarded 61 honorary doctorates to people who distinguished themselves in scholarly, political, or cultural affairs. During that time the university also changed from its original Protestant mission into a research university with broad aims and a diverse student body.
