Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Sun Tzu's Art of War is widely regarded as the most influential military & strategic classic of all time. Through 'reverse engineering' of the text structured around 14 Sun Tzu 'themes,' this rigorous analysis furnishes a thorough picture of what the text actually says, drawing on Chinese-language analyses, historical, philological, & archaeological sources, traditional commentaries, computational ideas, and strategic & logistics perspectives. Building on this anchoring, the book provides a unique roadmap of Sun Tzu's military and intelligence insights and their applications to strategic competitions in many times and places worldwide, from Warring States China to contemporary US/China strategic competition and other 21st century competitions involving cyber warfare, computing, other hi-tech conflict, espionage, and more. Simultaneously, the analysis offers a window into Sun Tzu's limitations and blind spots relevant to managing 21st century strategic competitions with Sun-Tzu-inspired adversaries or rivals. This book analyzes the three faces of Sun Tzu's Art of War: one anchored in Warring States China, a second in world military history, and a third in 21st century contexts like cyber warfare. The author identifies Sun Tzu's limitations and blind spots relevant to managing strategic competitions with Sun-Tzu-inspired adversaries. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (Number Line to 1). If you like your research from Harvard you have Paul R. Levitt who teaches in the Department of Sociology, and if you prefer Yale you have Scott A. Boorman who who teaches in their Department of Sociology. This book also has some interesting provenance, which a little research turned up. Off the top edge of the first front end paper the last name Bradbury is penned. Down near the bottom edge there is a colorless raised stamp that indicates the book comes from the library of Jack and Sandy Vehrenbury. That was a little tricky, but it turns out that Jack Bradbury and Sandra Vehrencamp had combined their name on the stamp and also as scientists had created or worked in a laboratory named Vehrenbury. According to Dr. Vehrencamp's Wikipedia profile 'They co-wrote a textbook, Principles of Animal Communication, published in 1998. It is a widely used work that combines physics, chemistry, neurobiology, cognitive science, evolutionary biology, behavioral ecology, and economics to delve deeply into animals and how they signal and communicate with one another. Its importance is highlighted by the fact that it has been cited more than 1,000 times. This textbook is highly regarded in the scientific community and is revered as the standard reference of the animal behavior world.' So it shouldn't surprise that they would have been reading this book. Both husband and wife have taught at the University Of California and Cornell University. Dr. Bradbury specializes in ornithology. Dr. Vehrencamp in Behavioral Ecology. Both taught at Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology and Department of Neurobiology and Behavior before retiring. Neither is known to be very altruistic. Just kidding. As you would expect they took excellent care of the book. You can see the red covers in the photos. They are perfectly clean. There isn't any wear that needs to be called out. The cover edges and corners look terrific. The spine ends have just a little of the usual crinkling. The page edges are very clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are in excellent condition, exceptionally clean (I didn't see any soiling) and free of wear (I didn't see any creasing). There are no markings other than their little stamp and no writing other than 'Bradbury.' There are no attachments of any kind. The dust jacket looks quite nice as well. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. That creates a little difficulty in distinguishing a crinkle from a tiny tear. So I'll just say that there is only slight wear at the edges (see photos). Off the bottom edge of the rear cover there's a small discoloration (third photo). Otherwise the jacket is quite clean. The flaps are in excellent shape, no wear at all. The jacket is not priced or clipped. The lettering on the flaps is purple, which is the color of altruism. Hmm. Here's a little bit from the jacket about the book: 'This book is the outcome of combining two historically separate areas of population biology. The formal models in The Genetics of Altruism continue the tradition of mathematical population genetics stemming from Wright, Haldane, and Fisher. The substantive area to which these models are applied is the comparative evolutionary biology of social behavior, taking cases and data both from the social insects (the social Hymenoptera and the termites) and from social vertebrates (chiefly mammals). Connecting these two fields is a specific new approach to unifying a broad set of evolutionary insights into social behavior through the use of social network models to describe the impacts of altruism and cooperation on individual fitness. Use of network models gives the modeling developments a quite combinatorial (I'm challenging that word) character.' Note that the challenge is not part of the quote. It goes on but you'll have to buy the book to read the rest.
