Book Condition: Very Good; light shelfwear to head, tail, tips, and board bottom edges; light bumping to head, tail, and lower tips. No DJ. Green cloth boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine and front board. Clean internals; internal hinges are sound and not split. 380 pp 8vo. This book, written by a Boston toxicologist, is in part autobiographic. While it is written for the layman, it contains much that is interesting to a physician. It describes the author's experience with industrial poisons, compensation work, work with war chemicals and expert testimony in court. The information regarding food poisoning, canning and pasteurization is especially good. The descriptions of cases of accidental poisoning and of poisons used in homicide are interesting to both the physician and the layman. A clean very presentable copy.

Paperback. Condition: Fine. Paperback. "William Morris was the most prominent Victorian artist to embrace the new socialist movement of the 1880s, and his socialist diary one of the only two extended diaries he kept. The diary provides us with a highly accessible introduction to his political activities, and documents the energy and enthusiasm of his work for 'the social revolution', a commitment which strongly influenced the origins of British socialism. Florence Boos's carefully edited text is supplemented by many running notes and separate biographical sketches of fellow-workers in the early socialist movement whom Morris mentioned in the diary" (back cover). Fine in red paper wrappers with black title to spine and front cover. Slight wear to corners of wrappers and slight yellowing to interior pages. Clean and bright. 75 pages. MOR/080515.

Paperback. Condition: New. Metamathematics and the Philosophical Tradition is the first work to explore in such historical depth the relationship between fundamental philosophical quandaries regarding self-reference and meta-mathematical notions of consistency and incompleteness. Using the insights of twentieth-century logicians from Gödel through Hilbert and their successors, this volume revisits the writings of Aristotle, the ancient skeptics, Anselm, and enlightenment and seventeenth and eighteenth century philosophers Leibniz, Berkeley, Hume, Pascal, Descartes, and Kant to identify ways in which these both encode and evade problems of a priori definition and self-reference. The final chapters critique and extend more recent insights of late 20th-century logicians and quantum physicists, and offer new applications of the completeness theorem as a means of exploring "metatheoretical ascent" and the limitations of scientific certainty. Broadly syncretic in range, Metamathematics and the Philosophical Tradition addresses central and recurring problems within epistemology. The volume's elegant, condensed writing style renders accessible its wealth of citations and allusions from varied traditions and in several languages. Its arguments will be of special interest to historians and philosophers of science and mathematics, particularly scholars of classical skepticism, the Enlightenment, Kant, ethics, and mathematical logic.

Paperback. Condition: New. William Morris's socialist essays remain uncannily relevant for our time, as he addresses issues of inequality, precarity, and the need for pleasure and creative fulfilment in work and life. This scholarly edition traces Morris's opinions from his early insistence that all must have access to art in its broadest sense, through his years as a leader and theorist of the nascent British socialist movement. Finally, as Morris became the elder statesman of the socialist/labour cause, these writings demonstrate his efforts to reconcile competing factions in the service of common aims.
