Schoppe notes the vast development of research into the German language since 1894: "Gerade damals begann die deutsche Volkskunde aufzublühen; die zahlreichen über ganz Deutschland verbreiteten Gesellschaften für Volkskunde schenkten in ihren wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen den Volkswörtern und Sprichwörtern ihre Aufmerksamkeit" (Vorrede zur 6. Auflage). References to different editions of the Borchardt-Wustmann, from the 1880s to the 1955 edition are still essential to works tracking German idioms.
