Add to basketRare first separately published French edition of an important and influential interpretation of the stories of the Old and New Testament, in the popular form of 113 engraved illustrations by Pieter van der Borcht (1535-1608), from Mechelen, and explanatory text by the anti-denominational Dutch mystic Hendrik Jansen (van) Barrefelt, also known as "Hiël" (ca. 1530-1594?). Barrefelt initiated two series of engravings for pictorial Bibles around 1582, believing that the contemplation of the biblical images would speak to a wide audience and bring them closer to God, though he also believed that other pictorial Bibles distorted the Bible's meaning. He enlisted Van der Borcht to produce two series of etched and engraved illustrations of Bible stories and wrote brief commentaries to help people understand the images. Hamilton convincingly argues that the present series B was designed to appeal more to Protestants and the other series A to appeal more to Catholics. Hamilton calls these pictorial Bibles Barrefelt's "most successful" publications, "both in his lifetime and after."With an early owner's name partly obscured with an ink wash on the title page. Slightly browned, a few quires with faint water stains, and an occasional marginal tear or early restoration, but still generally in good condition. The vellum of the binding is wrinkled and shows several small tears, holes and cuts, and some early repairs and restorations.l A. Softcover. Condition: Fair. Petrus van der Borcht, Paul Uten Waele (illustrator). A handsome and well-regarded richly illustrated devotional work, issued (by the venerable Plantin press) in two books (with separate title pages), in a small personal size, with many of the woodcuts designed by Petrus van der Bocht and engraved by Paulus Wtewael. This copy collates complete (although the first title page is a little rough), which is harder to find; at the time of listing this book, other copies on the market note missing pages, which may reflect the nice illustrations, personal use size and daily assignments making it easy to withdraw a page and give it to a friend, loved one, or keep the page for oneself for special reasons related to a date. There are two devotionals, the devotional bound first (Evangeliorum Dominicalium Summaria.) is designed for weakly readings on saints. Each recto page has an "icon" (illustration) with a short accompanying text, the versos are blank. There are more than fifty-two readings (fifty-four) because the work follows the "Roman" liturgical calendar and there is some overlap of the liturgical seasons based on factors (year's day structure, leap year, etc). The second work is a day-by-day devotional, with each page devoted to a day of the year. The illustration format is the same, and it's very similar to some modern day-by-day devotionals (there is nothing new under the sun). The engravings are of a higher quality than some small-format books for the period, reflective of the skilled (and well-respected) artist, engraver and printer that produced the work. Bibliographic Details - USTC records the works separately. For Evangeliorum there are 13 copies recorded in the world's libraries, and it's catalogued as 406655. For Sanctorum, there are nine copies recorded, and it's catalogued as 406677. Copies are held at the Plantin Museum, the Bodleian and The Morgan, among other important libraries. Pettegree, Walsby catalogued Evangeliorum as 4953 and Sanctorum as 6379 Brunet called out the printing in his 5th edition, volume 7, column 467. Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 11 x 6 x 3.5 cm. Signed in eight. Vellum binding. Printer's mark on title page. Each devotional page illustrated, versos blank. Books collated separately, with individual title pages, but catalogues say they were issued together; collate complete - 1584 Evangeliorum Pages 1-112 (112 misnumbered 212) Collation a-g8 1584 Sanctorum Kalendarii Romani Pages 1-464 Collation A-Z8, Aa-Ff8 Condition - See pictures. Some rubbing, darkening, lightly bumped corners to binding. Manuscript title on spine very faded. Red ink spot on front board. Some ex-libris marks to pastedown and flyleaf. Occasional moisture mark from edges throughout. Text block with toning throughout; occasional fox spot, dog-eared page, page-edge chip, thumbing, etc. Title page repaired (backing applied), mounted, with some loss of text, manuscript replacement of text, rubbing, etc. 1st handful of leaves with some chipping to page edges/corners. "R" written on rear blank binder's endpaper.

[4 blank], 57 of a possible 60 plates, [8 blank], 59 and 60 apparently never included, residue of stub to pl. 20. Watermark: coat of arms surmounted by trefoil. Engraved title with half-figure of Christ within frame depicting scientifically accurate fruit and animals; 57 numbered miniature engravings (62 x 48mm) printed on recto or verso, signed HSD, PB or IS. A few lower edges untrimmed, slight browning in places (damp paper), small ink burn to blank lower edge of a dozen ll., extreme lower outer blank corner of last few ll. ink stained and a trifle frayed, occasional minor finger-soiling to blank margins. A very good, unsophisticated copy in contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties. Ms. autograph 1583 Di Pellegrino Pellegrini (lightly crossed out) and later ms. Di Francesco Spada to first blank, C16 pen trials to blank verso of pl.12 (Pellegrini s?). This charming little book was in the library of Pellegrino Pellegrini (or Pellegrino Tibaldi, 1527-96) c.1583, the famous Italian Mannerist painter and architect, who worked extensively in Milan (esp. at the Chiesa di San Carlo Borromeo) and at the Escorial, replacing Federico Zuccari. This autograph is strikingly similar, in shape and style of the letters, to that on a holograph architectural drawing of the Sanctuary of Caravaggio (Pellegrini, pl.VII). Illustrated works focusing on the New Testament were very popular at the time, Pellegrini had a similar one for the Old Testament in his library. Pellegrino may have used such works not only for personal devotion, but also as iconographic sources for his paintings (Giuliani, p.80). Very rare collection of miniature biblical engravings illustrating episodes from the life of Christ. In addition to the title, this volume includes 57 exquisite plates here in fine impression out of a total of 60 (cf. Nagler, Brulliot and New Hollstein), plus an engraved title with charming and naturalistic depictions of plants and animals. Pocket-size collections of images like this one were carried around by artists as both instruments of personal devotion and sources of inspiration; for this reason they very rarely survive intact or complete. Of the 6 recorded copies in New Hollstein - excluding the present, which appears to be the only one known to have been bound 4 are incomplete and 1 unspecified. 18 engravings were cut by Monogrammist HSD. About 40 overall are after designs by Pieter van der Borcht (cf. New Hollstein). A renowned Flemish painter and etcher, Borcht worked as an illustrator for Plantin, e.g., on Dodoen s famous herbarium as well as numerous liturgical works. Monogrammist HSD was a Dutch engraver active in the period 1570-80, possibly in Antwerp (cf. Nagler). His extant work focuses on biblical illustrations, including a suite of engravings of the 12 apostles, after the German painter Hans Sebald Beham. 8 engravings, including the title, are here signed PB . No. 32 bears a monogram which could be read IS or SI , and which remains unidentified; no. 46 is signed HDS , perhaps for HSD . Add to basketFirst edition, in Flemish Dutch, of a didactic satire, mostly in verse, by the Flemish poet and lawyer Willem van der Borcht or Guilelmus a Castro (1621/22-1668) in Brussels, with elegies and epigrams alternating with prose passages. It allegorically presents a mirror of self-knowledge and knowledge of the world, intended to improve the faults of the age and show the foolishness and vanity of the world. The fine plates by Antoine van der Does, showing scenes of rich and frivolous society, are of interest for the costume and morals of the time. The "Toe-ghifte", an integral part of the edition, but with its own title-page on 2D1, represents the world as a capricious woman. The portrait shows Van der Borcht at age 21 with the motto "nosce te ipsum", and a 2-line verse by Ericus Puteanus below. The 3 illustrations show realistic genre scenes, influenced by Rubens. Half the copies listed by the STCV lack the portrait and/or the engraved title-page. One illustration was printed over a crease in the paper, leaving a white line through part of the scene. In very good condition, with a minor water stain in the head margin of the engraved title, just touching its border. Binding lacking ties, with 1 sewing support broken at the back hinge, slightly wrinkled and a bit dirty, but still good. First edition of a satire of society, with plates made for it by Antoine van der Does.l Bibl. Belg I, p. 319; BCNI 9630; Funck, pp. 282-283; STCV (8 copies incl. 4 incomplete). 18th-century vellum, sewn on 3 cords, with a hollow back, spine title in formal pen-drawn lettering. With engraved title-page (with a man holding the curtain open on a theatrical stage with winged satyrs holding masks and a cloth with the title above), letterpress title with arabesque fleurons, engraved portrait of the author seated at a writing table (after P. de Backer), both by Antoine van der Does ("AVD"), and 3 nearly full-page engraved illustrations in the text, probably by Van der Does. Further with woodcut tailpieces and decorated initials, and decorations built up from cast arabesque fleurons. Set in roman and italic type. Pages: [16], 271, [1] pp.

Illustrated By: Theodor Galle / Pieter van der Borcht Illustrator Bio: Theodor Galle (Dirck or Theodoor Galle, 1571-1633), working from designs by Pieter van der Borcht the Elder (c. 1545-1608) Provenance: S. del C. de Torrepalma - a provenance note for the Spanish noble house that held the title Conde de Torrepalma ("Count of Torrepalma"). The Condado de Torrepalma is a Spanish comital title created by King Carlos II in 1679 (royal dispatch 4 Nov 1680) for Alonso Verdugo y Albornoz. The title later passed into the Álvarez de las Asturias Bohórquez line and, by marriage and succession, connected with the Dukes of Gor. The name derives from the Torrepalma estate near Carmona (Seville). Notable holders include Alonso Verdugo de Castilla (1706-1767), 3rd Count, a diplomat, poet, and member of the Real Academia Española and Real Academia de la Historia. Synopsis: [Bound with:] Analecta sive Observationes reliquae ad militiam. Antuerpiae: apud Ioannem Moretum, 1602. Giusto Lipsio First Plantin-Moretus illustrated edition of Lipsius's classic reconstruction of the Roman army, a foundational text of early modern military science. In De Militia Romana Lipsius (1547-1606) systematises the organization, discipline, and tactics of the legions from Polybius and other classical sources, reviving Roman practice for use in the age of gunpowder. Its companion Analecta supplies further antiquarian notes. The magnificent suite of engravings?executed under Theodor Galle from van der Borcht's designs?represents one of the high points of the Plantin-Moretus press and the first sustained visual archaeology of the Roman army. The work was studied by Maurice of Nassau and other reformers who shaped seventeenth-century drill and tactics. A cornerstone of Renaissance military scholarship and a beautiful product of the Antwerp engraving tradition. Complete examples with all plates and the large folding Iconismus intact are now uncommon.
