Enders, Frederick Robbins, and Thomas H. Weller (there is a single lecture for these three laureates); Albert Schweitzer; W. Bothe. Max Born shared the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his fundamental research in quantum mechanics, especially for his statistical interpretation of the wavefunction". Walter Bothe shared the Nobel Prize in Physics "for the coincidence method and his discoveries made therewith". Linus Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the elucidation of the structure of complex substances". John Franklin Enders, Thomas Huckle Weller and Frederick Chapman Robbins shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discovery of the ability of poliomyelitis viruses to grow in cultures of various types of tissue". Albert Schweitzer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952 "for his altruism, reverence for life, and tireless humanitarian work which has helped making the idea of brotherhood between men and nations a living one". The Nobel lectures by Born and Bothe are in German. The Nobel lecture by Schweitzer is in French. The Nobel lecture by Pauling, and the joint lecture by Enders, Robbins, and Weller, are in English. Ernest Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style". Hemingway was unable to attend the Nobel Prize award ceremony, but he sent a brief speech that was read at the ceremony in his absence, by the United States ambassador to Sweden. That speech is printed on pp. 54-55 in this volume.
