John Franklin Enders, Thomas Huckle Weller and Frederick Chapman Robbins shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discovery of the ability of poliomyelitis viruses to grow in cultures of various types of tissue". Albert Schweitzer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952 "for his altruism, reverence for life, and tireless humanitarian work which has helped making the idea of brotherhood between men and nations a living one".
