The author begins by analyzing the main features of Italian literary taste and concludes that the modern Italian taste is corrupted. The main topics of this book are: the reasons that have led to this corruption, the characteristics of this new taste, and the possible remedies that can be applied to bring about improvement. The author explores how, when, and why the taste has undergone such transformation and reflects on the dangers of relying too heavily on foreign influence in literature. This book is compelling because it reflects on the importance of understanding and appreciating one's own language and culture while acknowledging the benefits that come from outside influence. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Borsa (1751-1798) was a nephew and student of the great Italian literary theorist Saverio Bettinelli (1718-1808). In this essay he discusses the influences on Italian literature of French writing and Enlightenment philosophy. In a separate chapter he discusses the influence of English literature and philosophy, mentioning Hume, Shaftesbury, Pope, Butler and Swift. Borsa is concerned that Italian authors are blindly imitating the English rather than coming up with original ideas. In the second part, Arteaga (1747-1799) gives a close analysis of BorsaĠs works, and adds his own commentary on the Italian taste, speaking about classical models as well as recent French influences, including Montesquieu, Rousseau, Corneille and Riccoboni. Borsa went on to write a play, Agamennone e Clitnnestra (1786). Arteaga was the author of Le Rivoluzioni del Teatro Musicale Italiano, the first critical history of opera (1783). Octavo. xii, 150, [2, privilege and errata] pp. Contemporary marbled calf, gilt spine with burgundy morocco label, edges stained red. A little light dampstaining to the last few pages near the upper margin, else a fine copy. First edition of this essay written in response to a prize question at the Academy of Mantua on the topic of current taste in Italian literature. OCLC lists only the Newberry Library in North America for this edition; a few other American libraries have the 1785 edition.
