Seller: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Softcover. Condition: Good. Early reprint. 12mo. 162, [12 ads] pp. Illustrated with photographic plates especially posed for by George Bothner, George Fisher, Pastime A.C., and William T. Brown of Wood's Gymnasium. Pictorial wrappers. Chips and creased tears on wraps (affecting text), extensive tape repairs on spine and covers, about good only, though the text and plates are largely clean throughout. Bothner was considered alternately the "most scientific" and best "defensive wrestler" of his day. He was undefeated in his seven years as an amateur before beginning his professional career in 1896 under Hugh Leonard. He won the lightweight wrestling championship and served as the mat coach for Princeton University. He was also a pioneer in the wildly popular "Wrestling versus Jiu Jitsu" matches. This comprehensive manual is lavished with more than 60 instructional photographs, and is a valuable resource for grapplers and historians of martial arts. Uncommon.
