Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. Scenes and Plays; by Gordon Bottomley; Constable & Co Ltd, London, 1929. Presentation copy to Edward Marsh, 22nd May 1929. Gordon Bottomley (1874 1948) was an English poet, known particularly for his verse dramas. Aged seven, Bottomley contracted a tubercular illness that would affect him for the rest of his life. As a result, he was invalided for long periods of time and was unable to travel widely or live in a town. Bottomley began writing poetry in the 1890s and was influenced by the Romantic poets and even more so by such later figures as Rossetti and Algernon Swinburne. Bottomley included many famous writers, poets and artists as friends. An early environmentalist, Bottomley's writing was always closely grounded in geographical location. Bottomley studied the work of artists and was a dedicated collector. He bought artworks when he could afford to, and his friends also gave him their art in gratitude for his support and friendship. In the 1940s Bottomley and his wife Emily gave their personal art collection of six hundred paintings, prints and drawings to the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle, Cumberland. The bequest included a nationally important collection of works by the Pre-Raphaelites including pictures by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, Arthur Hughes, Ford Madox Brown, Elizabeth Siddal and Simeon Solomon. Sir Edward Howard Marsh KCVO CB CMG (1872 1953) was a British polymath, translator, arts patron and civil servant. He was the sponsor of the Georgian school of poets and a friend to many poets, including Rupert Brooke and Siegfried Sassoon. In his career as a civil servant he worked as private secretary to a succession of the United Kingdom's most powerful ministers, particularly Winston Churchill. This softcover book is in near-fine condition. Signed by Author(s).

London: Constable, 1932. First edition (NCBEL, v.4). Original printed wrappers, printed paper labels, 166 pp. Presentation copy: "For Margaret Marshall and Lowsayl and Timmis and Drummelzier and Ben Jock and Gameshope and Tweed; with many kind remembrances. From Gordon Bottomley. The Sheiling: Silverdale: Cornforth. Christmas: 1932". Bottomley was interested in work which would find the broadest appeal. "The theatre. attracted him.he was one of several poets, from Steven Phillips to Laurence Binyon, who contended for the revival of a new romantic drama wherein poetry should once more dominate." That list would include W.B. Yeats and George Russell. "At first he believed that the Elizabethan kind of play.might capture the general audience; later he was more concerned with finding a special platform for the recital of dramatic poems." (Edmund Blunden in DAB). "In this distracted age, I believe the survival of poetry is involved in its being heard, not merely read;" (from an als offered in Catalogue 20, Michael Silverman, London, 2002). He suffered from respiratory problems and was often invalid; it made him seem reclusive. Unlike his friend Lascelles Abercrombie, who wished a contemplative, country fireside lifestyle but was stuck in London, Bottomley wished for a London artistic life but his illness kept him from it: "I feel.that every artist especially needs ten years of London life in his youth, before isolaton in even the most beautiful country can he fruitful for him. My illness deprived me of this." (letter to Paul Nash, 1912, in Poet and Painter, 1955, p.31). A little dust soiling, all edges foxed. A Very Good copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Festival Preludes, Gordon Bottomley, The Fanfrolico Press, London, 1930. From the colophon: Here end the Festival Preludes by Gordon Bottomley making the third book printed by the Fanfrolico Press, London on Barcham Green Charles I paper in Weiss Antiqua type, composition and machining J. Lindsay & W. J. Hatton, 1930. There are 110 copies for sale: this is no. T. Gordon Bottomley's signature. From the Author's Note: The poems now published here were written to be spoken before, between and after a series of choric plays (The Singing Sands, Towie Castle and Ardvorlich's Wife) when they had their first performance in Mr. John Masefield's garden-theatre at The Boar's Hill Festival of Spoken Poetry on July 25th, 1929. The Prologue and Epilogue were spoken by Mr. J. Clifford Turner, the two Interludes by Miss Helena Moore and Miss Eva Truman. At the repetition of the same programme at the Rudolf Steiner Hall London, on October 8th, 1929, all the poems were spoken by Mr. Clifford Turner. Following that last sentence Gordon Bottomley has written in ink "and this is his copy, with the author's appreciation and remembrance. Gordon Bottomley 4th May, 1930, Silverdale, Carnforth. In addition, Bottomley crossed out Eva Truman's name and wrote in "Sylvia Talbot". A history of the press The Fanfrolico Press; Satyrs, Fauns & Fine Books, by John Arnold was published by the Private Libraries Association in 2009. Here is some commentary from that history relating to this book Quarter smooth buckram with patterned paper boards, title in gold on the spine. Published April 1930 at 10s6d. British Library copy deposited 20 August 1930. It is likely that a number of additional, lettered copies were also issued, for the private use of the author, perhaps in lieu of royalties. This slight book is in fine condition. Laid inside is a newspaper clipping entitled "Mr. Gordon Bottomley's Dramatic Poems". Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. One of 400 copies. Narrow 4to. pp. [x], 68. 8 full-page illustrations. Tipped-in illustration facing title-page states that 'The First and Sole Publisher of this Book is Elkin Mathews, Vigo Street, London, W. MCMIV.' Original publisher's green cloth-backed boards lettered dark green on upper cover paper title label on spine. Presentation copy: 'To Mr. and Mrs, Seumus O'Sullivan, from a vanished Age; with Gordon Bottomley's appreciation and regard. Silverdale: 3rd August, 1938.' A very good handwritten signed letter loosely inserted from Gordon Bottomley to Seumas O'Sullivan addressed from The Sheiling, Silverdale, Carnforth, Lancs, dated 4th August, 1938 and consisting of about 380 words in which he explains why it has taken so long to send the books, saying, 'they come with an admiration of very long standing, and a new personal regard that is as great.' He mentions their mutual friend Austin Clarke who told him O'Sullivan would like him to write for his Review on spoken poetry and its relation to the stage - something he will do after his trip to the Dalmation coast. 'The Gate of Smaragdus' was entirely designed by Bottomley who supervised the local printing of it at Ulverston. He was a friend of Shannon and Ricketts which is evident in the design and in the illustrations by his friend Clinton Balmer, a young artist from Liverpool whose work captures Shannon's Pre-Raphaelite style. The publication of the book was fraught as just as it was about to be issued by the Unicorn Press they were wiped out and everything sold at auction. Bottomley had an exciting time trying to retrieve the edition of his book, which had not been included in the sale. He eventually found it in the cellar of a warehouse in the city bound for India and the colonies. Elkin Mathews then undertook the publication. James Sullivan Starkey, otherwise known as Seumus O'Sullivan (1879 Ğ 1958) was an Irish poet and editor of 'The Dublin Magazine', who knew most of the literary figures in Dublin at the time. He married Estella Solomons, a notable Irish artist. Gordon Bottomley (1874 Ğ 1948) Yorkshire poet and playwright, is known particularly for his verse dramas. He was an invalid much of the time due to tuberculosis. He married very happily and corresponded with many artists and poets. A slight crease mark to upper corner of leaves, otherwise very good indeed. Slight creasing, otherwise very good indeed. Excellent condition. Signedes.
