Privately printed in an edition of 100 numbered copies signed by Suzanne Moore, Robert Lyons, and Frank Faulkner. A fine copy in a fine clamshell box. Designed and pr…oduced under the direction of David Bourbeau and published by the Trustees for the Estate of Robert Francis in honor of the poet's ninth decade. The calligraphy is by Suzanne Moore. The frontispiece portrait, photographed in 1980 by Robert Lyons, and the portrait following "Paradox," photographed in 1979 by Frank Faulkner, were hand-pulled from dust-grained photogravure plates made by Jon Goodman from the original negatives. The typeface is Dante, designed by Giovanni Mardersteig in 1947 and here set in Monotype by Michael and Winifred Bixler. The paper is Fabriano Umbria. The text was printed at Wild Carrot Letterpress by Daniel Keleher. The edition was bound at Thistle Bindery in cover paper handmade at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. linen-covered boards, cloth clamshell box with an engraving on the front panel and paper / leather spine label. Photographs of the books were taken by Stephen Petegorsky & the offset lithography is by Gail Alt and Roberta Bannister at the Oxbow Press.

With an extra print signed by Moser laid-in to the box. Box a wee dusty on the outside, the rest fine.

Contact seller5-star sellerVery intriguing calligraphy sample which was executed by the book artist and design binder David P. Bourbeau (1942-2009) who established the Thistle Bindery in Massachusetts in 1975. Bourbeau was influenced by Leonard Baskin, and studied under Arno Werner. Hi was instrumental in the founding of the New England Chapter of the Gui…ld of Book Workers. The letters in this sample are scratched into the sepia ink which has perhaps been rolled on, darker and thicker in the middle where the lettering occurs, and accentuating the lines in the paper. An innovative and attractive piece. 15x22" with calligraphy alphabet and date in 1982. Signed by Bourbeau on the verso in pencil. Few light blemishes, else fine.
