Quarto, paperbound (stiff, stapled, full-color illustrated wrappers), 80 pp. Fair, with heavy wear to spine; interior clean & tight. Numerous illustrations. From Preface: In this book I have set out to trace the development of the model aeroplane. I hope particularly that the newcomers to aero-modelling will find both interest and inspiration from the doings of others. There is a great deal one can learn from the "early ones." There is a saying that there is nothing new in this world. This is not quite true in the case of the aeroplane, but it is true that since the aerplane really got into its stride, improvement has been chiefly in the nature of development rather than radical change. Whilst writing this book, and recalling the data and ideas of some of the best model practice in the country during the history of the model aerplane, I have felt a great urge to design and construct, incorporating all sorts of exciting combinations of shape, wing loading, power and gadgets, and I feel that aeromodellers cannot but get the same stimulus when they find set before them all this thought that has gone into the production of famous and winning models by so many people It is not only from the latest models that one finds oneself wishing to borrow ideas -- many of the older ideas can be used, or modified and adapted. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a method for using heavy residual oil as fuel in kitchen ranges and steam boilers. The author's focus, driven by the scarcity of coal during wartime, is on using this fuel for domestic purposes and presents the technical and logistical challenges of burning oil in existing ranges. The author provides a detailed history of oil production, combustion methods, and early attempts at oil-burning apparatus. The book then examines the principles of oil combustion, focusing on three methods: Open hearth, vaporizing, and atomizing. The problems of atomization, air supply, and temperature are considered, leading to the author's development of an oil burner for kitchen ranges that met the specified criteria. The book concludes with a detailed description of the author's oil-burning system's application to large institutional kitchens and steam boilers, including diagrams to demonstrate the apparatus and its installation. By presenting practical methods for using oil as an alternative to coal, this book will interest those researching combustion or fuel history and those seeking to understand the domestic use of heavy oils. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
