This book contains paintings from the original book, each of which has been rescanned and enlarged, presenting them as they have not been seen for a hundred years. Opposite each painting is a page containing full-colour images relating to the painting, from period maps and postcards to paintings and railway tickets, together with a text placing the painting in its contemporary context. The new introduction sets the historical scene for the bustling university and market city that was Oxford a hundred years ago. The introduction is written by Tim Healey, a well-known author, columnist and expert on Oxford history. The main text is by Su Box, Oxford author and editor.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 19 × 12.5cm, 112pp. A rather scarce first edition of a book about the making of Gainsborough Studio's The Bad Lord Byron starring Dennis Price, Linden Travers, Joan Greenwood, and ai Zetterling. Illustrated with black and white photographs, the book tells of the uphill struggle in bringing the Romantic poet's scandalous life to the screen under 1940s censorship rules. The film was a flop, and despite the well-researched script, it was dismissed by critics, as well as the hostile reaction from censors in both the UK and the US. The book includes a list cast and crew members. Also included is the promotional flyer from J Arthur Rank, again with cast and credits. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age, with some fading to the boards' edges but the contents are clean. The dustwrapper has a little edgewear but has not been price-clipped and is now with a protective sleeve. The leaflet is good plus. It has been folded once but remains in good readable condition.
