Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Deluxe Edition, with presentation page made out to Stanley T. Henshaw (1891-1954), Los Angeles cement company executive and son of California Supreme Court Associate Justice Frederick W. Henshaw, as well as a personal inscription from Workman to Henshaw on the front flyleaf. Laid in is an invitation to the 1917 golden wedding anniversary celebration of William H. Workman and Maria Boyle, Boyle's parents. Octavo: xiv, 430 pp. with a frontispiece portrait and numerous textual illustrations and photographs. Original coarse cloth-covered boards over a tan leatherette spine, with gilt-stamped titling, borders, and decoration. The spine is lightly toned, with some mild rubbing to the corners and tips; otherwise very good. Boyle Workman's anecdotal history of the city of Los Angeles, where he was born in 1868, the oldest child of William H. Workman and Maria Boyle. Boyle Workman was named for his maternal grandfather, Andrew A. Boyle, for whom Boyle Heights was named. His great-uncle, William (Don Julian) Workman, came to California in 1841 with John Rowland; the two men were subsequently granted Rancho La Puente. William H. Workman served as mayor (1886-88) of Los Angeles. Following his father's example, Boyle Workman served as assistant city treasurer (1900-07), as a Water and Power commissioner (1913-17), and as a city councilman (1919-27). He was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor in 1929. Originally a series of 57 daily articles for the Los Angeles Evening Herald and Express published in 1935, his history went through at least four editions. He was an eyewitness to much of the history he describes here.
