This book provides a detailed picture and comparison of the naval power of England, France, America, and Russia as of 1863, during the American Civil War. The author meticulously details the tonnage, firepower, armor, and speed of various ship classes used by these nations, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of wooden ships versus ironclad vessels, and smoothbore cannons versus rifled artillery. The book also explores the implications of new technologies like iron armor and heavy artillery on naval warfare. The author concludes that the American navy, despite its late start in adopting ironclads, possessed a significant advantage over its European counterparts thanks to the development of the revolutionary Monitor-class warships, armed with powerful new rifled cannons. This book offers valuable insights into a pivotal period in naval history, providing a comprehensive analysis of the technological and strategic developments that would shape the future of sea power. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
