Baron A Paris, chez Pierre Ribou, 1694 (8)-97-(3) pages Reliure plein maroquin rouge signé HARDY (exécutée vers 1865-1870), dos richement orné aux petits fers, triple filet doré en encadrement des plats, large dentelle dorée en encadrement intérieur des plats, doublures et gardes de papier peigne, tranches dorées sur marbrure. Reliure parfaitement conservée. Intérieur très frais (exemplaire lavé au moment de la reliure comme presque toujours à cette époque). La cahier H de la Coquette a le papier roussi (pp. 85 à 96). Nouvelle édition peu commune qui réunit 4 pièces de l'auteur. Une première édition avait paru chez Thomas Guillain en 1694. Ce sont ici les mêmes feuilles imprimées qui ont été utilisées et remises en vente par le libraire Pierre Ribou à la date de 1704 soit dix ans plus tard. La plupart des exemplaires de cette remise en vente de 1704 ne contiennent pas Les Enlèvemens (bien présent ici en tête de volume). Les feuillets de privilèges originaux sont bien présents. Les Enlèvements, comédie en un acte et en prose représentée pour la première fois au Théâtre-Français le 6 juillet 1685, imprimée l'année suivante (1686) à Paris chez Thomas Guillain, est ici en édition originale qui semble rare. Elle a été achevée d'imprimer pour la première fois le 15 mars 1686. Le théâtre complet de Baron ne parut qu'après sa mort, en 1742 en 2 volumes in-12 puis en 1759 en 3 volumes in-12. Dans notre exemplaire L'Homme à bonne fortune contient une Epître et une Préface, de même pour l'Andrienne qui contient un Avis au lecteur. Dans notre exemplaire les feuillets contenant l'Epître à Madame la Dauphine (3 pages) et la liste des acteurs (1 page) n'ont pas été reliés pour la Coquette. Michel Boyron dit Baron (1653-1729), grand comédien et dramaturge français, fut l'élève de Molière avant de devenir son partenaire de scène et, selon certains témoignages, son amant passionné. Considéré comme le plus grand acteur de sa génération, il interpréta les œuvres majeures du règne de Louis XIV, de Corneille à Racine, excellant tant dans le comique que dans le tragique. Auteur de dix comédies en prose ou en vers, dont la plus célèbre, L'Homme à bonne fortune, fut jouée jusqu'au milieu du XIXᵉ siècle, il marqua profondément l'histoire théâtrale. Retiré en 1691 après une carrière triomphale, il fit un retour sensationnel en 1720, à près de soixante-dix ans, poursuivant jusqu'à sa mort en 1729 une seconde carrière sur la scène du Palais-Royal. Il fut le père d'une dynastie de comédiens et la figure centrale d'un pan essentiel du théâtre classique français. Provenance : aucun ex libris n'est présent dans l'exemplaire cependant nous avons retrouvé sa trace dans le catalogue de la vente d'un choix de beaux livres français dressé par le libraire Adolphe Labitte en 1875 (n°165). Superbe exemplaire parfaitement établi par Hardy au milieu du XIXe siècle.
