Dressée au sommet d'une colline dont le voyageur enthousiaste fait vite une montagne, étirée derrière ses murailles médiévales, la vieille cité se déploie sur l'horizon, gouvernant avec superbe le paysage, se détachant sur le ciel auquel elle semble unie par les tours ajourées de sa cathédrale. Notre-Dame de Laon, l'une des premières grandes églises gothiques, a été construite d'un seul jet en moins d'un demi-siècle (vers 1150-1200) grâce à l'obstination d'un puissant collège de chanoines.
