Dressée au sommet d'une colline dont le voyageur enthousiaste fait vite une montagne, étirée derrière ses murailles médiévales, la vieille cité se déploie sur l'horizon, gouvernant avec superbe le paysage, se détachant sur le ciel auquel elle semble unie par les tours ajourées de sa cathédrale. Notre-Dame de Laon, l'une des premières grandes églises gothiques, a été construite d'un seul jet en moins d'un demi-siècle (vers 1150-1200) grâce à l'obstination d'un puissant collège de chanoines. Image de la Jérusalem céleste, forteresse de la Foi, église mère visible des confins du diocèse, cette construction de grandes proportions, harmonieusement équilibrée dans ses volumes inédits, est le fruit de la prospérité des campagnes environnantes au XIIe siècle. Rare aubaine, la découverte du monument peut ici se prolonger par celle d'un quartier canonial presque intact, où subsistent les vestiges d'une ville miniature avec ses palais, ses hôpitaux médiévaux et ses hôtels de l'âge classique. Le lecteur est invité à parcourir huit siècles de la vie de la cathédrale, jusqu'à sa restauration salvatrice. Sa signification n'a cessé d'évoluer au fil des générations, au point que le monument historique d'aujourd'hui est profondément différent de l'église que découvraient, émerveillés, les pèlerins du temps de Saint Louis. En s'attardant sur l'action des hommes qui ont fait vivre ce lieu au fil des temps et l'ont sans cesse transformé, les auteurs ont donné au présent ouvrage une orientation particulière et originale. C'est en somme une église vivante, dans son quartier, sa ville et son diocèse, mémoire de la vie chrétienne, élément maître du paysage et de l'identité locale qui est ici présentée. Cette démarche, donnant à l'Histoire une place de choix, vise à retrouver la dimension humaine et spirituelle de la cathédrale, pour amener chacun à renouer avec le sens profond de l'édifice.

Research into traditional areas of Homeric scholarship (e.g., language, the structure of the text, etc.) has come a long way since the last comprehensive commentaries on the Iliad were carried out, that is, the commentary by Ameis-Hentze in German language in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth cent…ury as well as the Cambridge commentary by Kirk et. al. in English language in the 1980/90s. Much of this kind of research is now set upon a much surer methodological and theoretical foundation. Developments in the field of Mycenology and in the study of Linear B, oral poetry, and the history of ancient Troy in particular, have made possible a number of new insights and interpretive possibilities in Homer's epic. Moreover, modern secondary literature of all major languages has been systematically covered. The "Basel Commentary" to the Iliad is a new, up-to-date, standard work that addresses these issues directly and will be of interest to scholars, teachers, and students alike. Central to the commentary on Iliad 24 is the interpretation of one of the most exciting and most moving scenes of the Iliad: how Priam, the king of Troy, makes his way to his mortal enemy Achilles, by whose hand his son Hector had fallen; how the god Hermes leads the old man almost magically into the army camp of the Greeks; how Achilles, at the end of an emotional encounter with Priam, leaves the body of Hector for burial.
