Wie kein zweiter Komponist seiner Zeit arbeitet er sich an der Bibel ab. War Brahms ein ,gottloser Ketzer" oder ein ,tief frommer Mann"? Jan Brachmann gibt darauf keine Pauschalantwort. Sein Buch sucht nach politischen und religionsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhangen ebenso wie nach musikalischen und biografischen Details. Eine Auswertung der Lekturespuren in Brahms' Handbibliothek zeigt den Komponisten als Leser Schopenhauers, Nietzsches, Luthers und der Bibel.
