Paperback. Condition: New. This is the first and only scholarly edition of Sir John Hawkins's Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D., a work that has not been widely available in complete form for more than two hundred years. Published in 1787, some four years before James Boswell's biography of Johnson, Hawkins's Life complements, clarifies, and often corrects numerous aspects of Boswell's Life.Samuel Johnson (1709-84) is the most significant English writer of the second half of the eighteenth century; indeed, this period is widely known as the Age of Johnson. Hawkins was Johnson's friend and legal adviser and the chief executor of his will. He knew Johnson longer and in many respects better than other biographers, including Boswell, who made unacknowledged use of Hawkins's Life and helped orchestrate the critical attacks that consigned the book to obscurity.Sir John Hawkins had special insight into Johnson's mental states at various points in his life, his early days in London, his association with the Gentleman's Magazine, and his political views and writings. Hawkins's use of historical and cultural details, an uncommon literary device at the time, produced one of the earliest "life and times" biographies in our language. The Introduction by O M Brack, Jr., covers the history of the composition, publication, and reception of the Life and provides a context in which it should be read. Annotations address historical, literary, and linguistic uncertainties, and a full textual apparatus documents how Brack arrived at this definitive text of Hawkins's Life. …

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. What if the biggest questions in life have been hiding in plain sight? What if the clues have been there all along?I'm not a scientist.I'm not a philosopher.I'm just a curious hillbilly who started asking questions.Questions like.- Why is there something instead of nothing?- Why does the universe obey laws?- Where did the information in DNA come from?- Why does consciousness exist?- Why do human beings hunger for meaning, purpose, truth, and love?- At what point do enough coincidences stop looking like coincidence?Every question led to another.Every answer uncovered another clue. And after years of following those clues through science, philosophy, history, prophecy, and everyday life, they all seemed to point in the same direction.Toward a Creator.Tell Me I'm Crazy isn't a debate. It isn't a textbook. It isn't a sermon. It's a conversation.Imagine sitting on a front porch late at night with a cup of coffee while a combat medic, pastor, scuba instructor, and lifelong question-asker walks you through the trail of evidence that changed his life.Along the way you'll explore: - Why the universe appears astonishingly ordered- Why information may be life's greatest mystery- Why consciousness is harder to explain than we think- Whether aliens, simulations, or the multiverse actually solve the biggest questions-or simply move them- Why biblical prophecy deserves another look- Why "one clue isn't much. but a hundred clues start telling a story."You don't have to agree with every conclusion. You don't even have to believe in God.You only have to be willing to ask honest questions.Whether you're a skeptic, a believer, or someone who simply enjoys thinking about life's biggest mysteries, this book invites you to follow the clues wherever they lead.Maybe I'm crazy.Or maybe.you see it too.
