Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Large-format illustrated softcover exhibition catalogue published for the exhibition held at Didier Aaron, Inc., New York, October 10-November 2, 1996, with Brame & Lorenceau, Kate de Rothschild and Didier Aaron. Designed and produced by Societa Editrice Umberto Allemandi & C., Turin, and printed in Turin, Italy. The catalogue comprises 71 numbered drawings, dating from about 1480 through the early twentieth century, reproduced in black-and-white and color and accompanied by scholarly catalogue entries. Contemporary bookseller records describe approximately 102 pages. The breadth is excellent: Flemish and European schools lead into French masters and draftsmen including Francois Boucher, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Eugene Delacroix, Theodore Gericault, Hubert Robert, Jean-Baptiste Pillement, Nicolas Lancret, Jean-Francois Millet, Johan Barthold Jongkind and others. Particularly interesting is the catalogue's emphasis on provenance, previous literature and exhibition history, making it more than a sales brochure. Several works catalogued here subsequently entered major collections or developed substantial later exhibition histories. Condition: Near Fine. The illustrated cream wrappers remain clean and attractive with only slight shelf/handling wear visible at the extremities. Binding appears firm and square; interior clean, bright and unmarked, with reproductions retaining strong contrast and color. No dust jacket, as issued/designed for this softcover exhibition catalogue. This is the original 1996 exhibition catalogue, not a later retrospective or facsimile. Alexandr--Evariste Fragonard's Oedipus' Fury, catalogue no. 43, was subsequently purchased by the Princeton University Art Museum in 1996. Princeton's present collection record explicitly cites Brame & Lorenceau, Kate de Rothschild-Didier Aaron, Master Drawings 1996 in both its provenance and bibliography. The same phenomenon occurs elsewhere. Gilles-Paul Cauvet's decorative-panel drawing, no. 23, subsequently appeared in exhibitions at Stanford and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; modern scholarship continues to cite this 1996 catalogue. Richard de Lalonde's Study for a Commode with the Monogram of Marie-Antoinette, no. 26, likewise has a later exhibition history that explicitly traces through this catalogue. And works by Jean-Baptiste Pillement appearing with Didier Aaron in Master Drawings 1996 continue to be cited in present-day specialist and auction cataloguing. That gives the publication a useful second life: it preserves the 1996 attribution, provenance and ownership state of drawings that have since changed hands and, in some instances, entered museum collections. For researchers in drawings and provenance, that's considerably more useful than the rather understated wrapper suggests.…

Hardcover. Condition: As New.
