Wilhelm von Branca, né Wilhelm Branco (1844-1928) fut géologue à l'Institut prussien de géologie en 1882, puis professeur de géologie et de paléontologie : il enseigna dans les universités de Königsberg et de Tübingen, à l'Académie d'agriculture de Hohenheim puis à l'Université de Berlin. Il devint conseiller des mines en 1899. Il est à l'origine de la plus grande expédition menée pour exhumer des vertébrés fossiles, l'expédition Tendagura en 1909-1912 en Afrique Orientale Allemande. Son nom a été donné au dinosaure Brancasaurus et à l'espèce des Brachiosaurus brancai.
