A estreia aconteceu no Teatro Politeama, a 1 de… Março de 1926, numa "Récita Única" a favor dos vendedores de jornais de Lisboa, com Alves da Cunha no papel de Senhor Milhões e Joaquim Oliveira, que também encenou, no de Governador Civil. Num contexto marcado pela degradação da vida social e política da República, "O Doido e a Morte" contrapõe à vacuidade ridícula do Governador Civil a crítica da mediocridade e da decadência, através do discurso, lúcido e pleno de consciência trágica da Vida, produzido pelo alucinado Senhor Milhões.
