Él puso las bases de la investigación sobre la pintura, la escultura, el grabado, la arquitectura y la arqueología, con obras como el Diccionario histórico de los más ilustres profesores de las bellas artes en España (1800), Noticias de los arquitectos y arquitectura de España (1829) o el Sumario de las Antigüedades romanas que hay en España (1832). En este volumen se editan y estudian unos textos sobre estos mismos temas pero en un formato más breve, que el autor escribió entre 1812 y 1822. Varios aparecieron en la prensa de la época, otros quedaron manuscritos y fueron recogidos por distintos estudiosos decimonónicos, mientras algunos más son inéditos y se publican aquí por primera vez.
