Hardcover with dust jacket showing some mild wear and discolorations to inside of jacket. Gray covers with teal cloth spine and silver lettering. Some fading noted to edges of covers and spine. Pages clean and unmarked with many illustrations of postcards. Kenneth S. Brecher collected postcards as a child. He still has the cards his father sent home from business trips. There are also some from Oxford where he studied on a Rhodes Scholarship; from a melancholy sojourn in Paris; and from his trek in the Himalayas. Then there are the bizarre, humorous, or campy cards; the details of great paintings; the faces of actors and authors. Accompanying this sequence of visual images is a text filled with beguiling anecdotes and striking observations; the meeting with Samuel Beckett in a distinctly unliterary, tourist-thronged hotel in Paris; an account of Brecher's friendship with a tribal chief in the Amazon forest, and of his visits to various museums--from the Prado to Scotland Yard's grisly Black Museum.
