The American Revolution Battle of Monmouth Courthouse, which took place in eastern/central New Jersey in 1778. was not only the last major action in the Northern theater, it was also the longest and hardest-fought engagement of the entire War for Independence. When the Britiush abandoned Philadelphia and moved their troops northeastward toward New York City, American troops harassed their retreat. On June 28, one of Washington's main lieutenants, Major General Charles Lee, bungled an attack on the British rearguard (causing the infamous loss-of-temper by Washington); he was relieced of command and the Continentals stood toe-to-toe with the British, bloodily repulsing a series of pwerful attacks by crak troops.
