Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst ein gutes Exemplar dieser schönen Deutsch-Französischen Ausgabe. - Ralentir travaux, während eines gemeinsamen Aufenthalts von André Breton, René Char und Paul Éluard in der Provence, in Avignon und Umgebung, in L'Isle-sur-Sorgue, der Heimat René Chars,… entstanden, setzt die Reihe surrealistischer Gemeinschaftswerke fort, die 1919 mit Les champs magnétiques von André Breton und Philippe Soupault begann. Das Manuskript trägt das Datum 25.-30. März; zugleich wird der - gescheiterte - Versuch vermerkt, es sogleich in Avignon drucken zu lassen. Gedruckt wird es etwas später in Nîmes; in 300 Exemplaren für die Éditions surréalistes. Das Manuskript wurde dem Exemplar Nr. 1 auf China-Papier beigebunden; eine seinerzeit beliebte Technik, die Sammlerwelt zu befriedigen und auf elegante Weise die Druckkosten wieder hereinzuholen. Aus ihm gewinnt man Einblick in die "Herstellungsweise" der Gedichte. Die Texte sind abwechselnd von Breton, Char und Éluard niedergeschrieben und enthalten sehr zahlreiche Korrekturen. Offensichtlich wurden sie nicht nur in arbiträrer Folge von den drei Autoren geschrieben (bzw. diktiert), sondern auch gemeinsam in diesen "ersten Entwurf" hinein korrigiert. Man darf aus der Tatsache, daß Éluard in seinem Exemplar des Drucks noch eine nachträgliche Korrektur angebracht hat, wohl schließen, daß die Autoren sich bei der Korrektur auch gegenseitig korrigierten. Hierdurch dürfte das "Netz" der Texte bis zur Unentwirrbarkeit eng geworden sein. Entstanden sind die Gedichte sozusagen auf Schritt und Tritt, im Café, während der Fahrt im Auto. Auf dem Manuskriptblatt von L'école buissonière ist vermerkt: "Gedicht im Automobil geschrieben, eines Abends, auf der Fahrt von L'Isle-sur-Sorgue nach Avignon": die Niederschrift ist entsprechend verwackelt.
