Neuware - Mehr als 200 000 Häftlinge aus über 40 Ländern waren vom Sommer 1936 bis zur Befreiung im Frühjahr 1945 im Hauptlager des KZ Sachsenhausen oder in einem der rund 100 Außenlager inhaftiert. Mehrere Zehntausend überlebten die Lagerhaft nicht. In der Nacht zum 21. April 1945 begann die SS, das Lager aufzulösen. Über 33 000 Häftlinge, darunter Frauen und Kinder, wurden in Richtung Nordwesten getrieben. Unterwegs starben Hunderte von ihnen an Entkräftung oder wurden von SS-Angehörigen ermordet. Für die meisten Überlebenden endete der Todesmarsch zwischen dem 3. und 6. Mai 1945 im Raum Parchim-Ludwigslust-Schwerin. Etwa 3000 in Sachsenhausen zurückgebliebene Häftlinge hatten sowjetische und polnische Soldaten bereits am 22./23.
