Al mismo tiempo, ha habido un aumento manifiesto en el número de… personas que peregrinan tanto largas como cortas distancias. El desarrollo de la redacción académica ha sido particularmente significativo durante el periodo de la edad Media tardía, cuando no sólo el número de peregrinos había aumentado drásticamente, sino también la temperatura del debate sobre los beneficios espirituales de la peregrinación, la adoración asociada de las imágenes y el valor de las indulgencias.Para Compostela, tres textos fundamentales han sido reeditados. El texto en español del Liber Sancti Jacobi de A. Moralejo, publicado originalmente el 1951 y reeditado en 1992. Una edición crítica y traducción al inglés con notas de la renombrada Guía del Peregrino, libro Quinto del Codex Calixtinus, realizado por Paula Gerson y Jeanne Krochalis en 1993. Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, el Gobierno de Navarra reprodujo una edición limitada del indispensable trabajo de tres volúmenes de Vázquez de Parga, Lacarra y Uría, titulado "Las peregrinaciones a Santiago de Compostela", publicado originalmente en 1948 y reeditado en 1992.
