First edition; folio (51 x 38.5 cm); 22 hand-coloured lithograph plates heightened with gilt after Brindesi, gilt lithographed title, some slight spotting; contemporary blind blocked cloth, gilt title to upper board, a little rubbed, head and foot of spine neatly repaired, a couple of small closed tears to upper joints, upper inner hinge starting to split, otherwise a very good copy. A handsome work illustrating costumes from the Ottoman court during the reign of Mahmoud II (1808-1839). Elbicei Atika was also the name of a Costume Museum in Constantinople, originally in the Seraglio Armory. It may be that Brindesi modelled his subjects on exhibits in that museum, or that he was using the name metaphorically. Mahmoud II in ceremonial dress is one of the subjects in Plate I. Atabey 151; Blackmer 206; Colas 446; Lipperheide 1438.
