TITLE: Japan. Described and Illustrated by the Japanese, Written by Eminent Japanese Authorities and Scholars. Capt. Francis (Frank) Brinkley, editor. Boston & Tokyo: J. B. MIllet Company (1897-1898). 10 volumes______ DESCRIPTION: 10 volumes, folio size each measuring 16 x 12 1/2 inches (40 x 31 cm). This is the Yedo edition, limited to 1000 copies. The books are organized into specific topics spanning all aspects of Japanese life and culture including history, farming, the trades, religion, politics, and daily household activities. Each volume contains narrative text written in English by numerous Japanese scholars accompanied by three 8 x 10 1/2 inch hand-colored albumen photographs mounted on colored paper with captioned guard plates and a color flower collotype frontispiece by Ogawa Kazumasa protected by bound-in tissue paper. Text is further illustrated with over 200 half-tone black and white photographs distributed throughout the ten volumes. The text is printed on Japanese paper. Bindings are hard cover with beveled front edges, Japanese style fukuro-toji bindings tied with silk cords, covered with printed silk cloth dyed in Japan in patterns found in the Imperial Palace over boards - each volume with a different Japanese-style floral pattern. Paper labels with crane vignette and titling affixed to each front cover. All ten volumes protected with clear archival Grafix Dura Lar dust wrappers. ______CONDITION: Fine throughout, extremely rare in this condition. The delicate floral cloth binding covers are nearly entirely free of the soiling, fading, fraying, and rubbing with loss of cloth seen in nearly all copies. All tissue guards for the Kazusama color flower frontispieces intact. Entirely free of toning and foxing. Neat flowing handwritten note in ink on the blank copyright page of Vol. 1 (opposite the flower frontipiece) by Tadeusz (Tade) Styka to the original owner of this set dated June 1936 commemorating their time spent together and memories while in Japan. Styka was a noted Polish-born and French raised artist known for his portraiture, awarded the Legion of Honor by the French Government.______DISCUSSION: This extraordinary set is of significant historical and artistic importance. It was planned, photographed and written during Japan's transformation from a closed feudal society into a modern Western-style power and it was intended as Japan's calling card to the west, presenting its best face to the Western stage. The essays written by Japanese scholars were organized and edited by Capt. Francis Brinkley, a resident of Japan for over 40 years and owner/editor of the Japan Mail. The text includes an essay on Japanese art by Okakura Kakuzo, a student of Ernest Fenollosa and the first curator of Asian Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The highlight of this set, however, are the remarkable original photographs, all taken in Japan, which were individually printed, washed, fixed, toned, dried, hand-colored and pasted onto the page. The extraordinary number of original photographs (259 in all) used in the total number of sets of the various editions make this one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of 19th-century photographic publishing. Overall, this set is an historical look at Japan before it completed its transformation into Western modernization, a broad and detailed travelogue of Japan spanning both its main cities and obscure regions. This set is in exceptional condition, as close to its original condition as one could ever hope for.________NOTE: Because of the extreme size and weight of this set it must be sent in two separate packages. Domestic shipping cost in the United States is $75. International shipping cost with tracking to Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe with USPS International EXPRESS Priority is prohibitively expensive. I will absorb some of the cost and cap the shipping charge at $150. The additional shipping charge will be requested following initial purchase.
