In the book, he relates that he ran away from home at the age of thirteen, and ended up in Brownsville, Nebraska Territory. Although Brisbin vouches for Belden's veracity, many Western American scholars believe that most of Belden's narrative is a series of brash fabrications strung on a thread of historical fact.
