On 5 x 13.5 cm piece of paper, cut from the end of a letter and laid down on one side of part of a leaf from an album, the mount carrying a cropped cartoon on the other side. In good condition, lightly aged, with the mount a little ruckled. Simply reads: 'Your sincerely / August Courtauld'. Captioned on mount: 'August Courtauld - explorer'. The cartoon is intriguing. In black ink with pencil guide lines, and cropped at the bottom, it shows a bearded figure in military costume, standing on his doorstep with two trees beside him, confronting a young girl with the face and lorgnette of an old man with a sign which says 'CAUTION / NO ENGLISH / NEED APPLY'. Cloth. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. The first edition of Sledge: The British Trans-Greenland Expedition 1934 by Martin Lindsay, inscribed by polar explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson to a fellow arctic explorer, Major General Julius K. Lacey. (illustrator). First Edition, First Issue. Octavo, xi, [1], 342pp, [3]. Publisher's blue cloth, title stamped on spine. Stated "First published 1935" on copyright page. Boards rubbed and soiled, cloth spine sunned. Wear to rear paste down. Complete with 48 photographic plates, a frontispiece and a folding panorama by Andrew Croft. Light foxing throughout, occasional foxing to plates. Solid text block. Also complete with five maps, one a fold-out in fine condition. In the publisher's scarce dust jacket, with "21s. net" on front flap, light soiling to spine, wear and shallow chipping along top edge, solid hinges, a very good example. (Arctic Bibliography, 10171)This copy is inscribed on the front endpaper: "For Captain Julius Kahn Lacey / with best wishes for his Greenland investigations from / Vilhjalmur Stefansson / July 23, 1940." The 1934 British Trans-Greenland Expedition, led by Sir Martin Lindsay (1905-1981), began in May 1934 and lasted for about three months. The team covered approximately 570 miles, mapping the previously unexplored Crown Prince Frederick Mountain Range, the highest peaks in Greenland. They utilized lightweight, specially designed sleds and Greenland huskies for transportation, navigating the harsh Arctic environment. Despite facing temperatures as low as -30°F (-34°C), the expedition collected important scientific data on the ice cap's thickness, weather conditions, and glaciology. This expedition was followed in 1940 by a survey led by United States Air Force Captain Julius K. Lacey, who detailed possible locations for port facilities and air bases in Greenland, prior to U.S. involvement in World War II. Lacey went on to command the 384th Bombing Group during WWII and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, and Air Medal, all with Oak Leaf Clusters. Signed.

Folio (215 x 275 mm). 1 p. With the letterhead of Mohamed El-Chafai Bomboatman, a stamp dealer in Port Said. Four stamps pasted down, and handwritten signed note. An extraordinary document presenting examples of four stamps designed by T. E. Lawrence for the Arab Revolt, sent directly to His Majesty King George V, who has noted in his own hand: "These stamps are the new issue since the Sherif of Mecca has been on our side", signed simply "Geo". Reportedly, George V (an avid stamp collector) received around 400 Hijaz stamps. - What Lawrence and George V would have both understood was that postage stamps were a useful political tool. As Oriental Secretary at the Arab Bureau, Sir Ronald Storrs (1881-1955), wrote in his memoirs: "Shortly after the Arab Revolution we found that its success was being denied or blanketed by Enemy Press (which was of course quoted by neutrals), and we decided that the best proof that it had taken place would be provided by an issue of Hajaz postage stamps, which would carry the Arab propaganda" (quoted in Beech). Storrs also described how he "wandered with Lawrence round the Arab Museum in Cairo collecting suitable motifs in order that the design in wording, spirit and ornament, might be as far as possible representative and reminiscent of a purely Arab source of inspiration. Pictures and views were avoided, for these never formed part of Arab decoration, and are foreign to its art: so also was European lettering" (Beech). - T. E. Lawrence himself mentioned the stamps in a letter to his brothers in July 1916, excited by the prospect of design and paying special attention to a scheme to use flavoured gum on the back, which involved strawberry essence on the red stamps and pineapple juice on the green stamps. Both red and green are in fact represented here, though with their flavour untested. - The final designs were in fact the work of two men, neither of them Lawrence himself. First, Agumi Effendi Ali, who designed the ¼ piastre stamp (seen in green) and the ½ piastre stamp (seen in red), which David Beech states were inspired by the carved panels on the principal door of the al-Salih Talayi Mosque in Cairo and by the last page of a Holy Qur'an in the 14th century Mosque of Sultan Barquq, respectively. Second, Mustafa Effendi Ghozlan, who designed the 1 piastre stamp (seen in blue), inspired by "an ancient prayer niche in the Mosque of al-Amri at Qus in Upper Egypt" (Beech). This particular collection also includes an orange stamp, interestingly, noted as worth 1/10 piastre. - "Perhaps without this philatelic connection Lawrence might never have become 'Lawrence of Arabia'. For it was on this, his first visit to the Hijaz, that he met one of the sons of King Husayn of Hijaz, Emir Faysal (1885-1933) who was to become successively Commander of the Northern Army in the Arab Revolt 1916-1918, King of Syria from 1918 until 1920 when he was deposed by the French, and finally King of Iraq 1921-1933" (Beech). - A small closed tear, but a fine survival. - David R. Beech, "Hejaz: The First Postage Stamps of 1916 and T E Lawrence", in: The London Philatelist 114 (205), 323-327.

8vo. 479-498 pp., plus 8 black and white photographic plates. Original tan wrappers titled in black. Together with autograph letter signed, 1 p. on one leaf, 210 x 146 mm. An exceedingly scarce offprint by Freya Stark which provides a detailed account of her important travels with archaeologist Gertrude Caton Thompson (1888-1985) and the discoveries made in the Hadhramaut in 1937-38. Together with a signed manuscript letter from Stark to the cellist Sheridan Russell. - Stark was one of the first modern Europeans to explore much of the Middle East, including the Arabian Peninsula. After the famous Thompson expedition described herein, Stark would go on to spend the duration of WWII travelling in Egypt, Iraq, Syria and Southern Arabia, having offered her services to the British Ministry of Information who sent her to persuade government officials and local dignitaries to join, or continue supporting, the Allied cause. - The present volume is of no little importance: Gertrude Thompson was a foremost archaeologist and, like Stark, one of the few women in a field dominated by men. The expedition was successful in undertaking the first systemic excavations in the Hadhramaut region of Yemen, though Stark and Thompson famously clashed, and Stark returned home earlier than Thompson to give lectures on the pre-Islamic inscriptions she and Thompson had discovered, and which Stark had photographed. This volume comprises the content of these lectures, along with photographic plates reproducing Stark's inscription photos. - The letter, written in March 1977, indicates that Stark intended to return from a later Euphrates expedition by July and meet with her friend. It reads: "Fine, dearest Sheridan, I have written 25/7 in my little book, & hope to be back from Euphrates by then - Lovely. Terribly busy! Yours, Freya". - In excellent condition.

8vo and 12mo. Together 6 pp. on bifolia. With an autograph note attributed to William Jackson Hooker and an autograph letter monogrammed by the botanist Daniel Oliver. Scientific correspondence by the great botanist with mostly unnamed colleagues, concerning the exchange of specimens and their various designations. The earliest letter is addressed to the American botanist Michael Schuck Bebb, answering questions about willows: "The enclosed herewith contains the best that we can do for you in regard to the willows which Prof. Oliver has drawn up [.] We have no specimen named S. pyrifolia Anders [.]" (Kew, April 1877). - The keeper and librarian of the herbarium in Kew, Daniel Oliver (1830-1916), is also mentioned in the second letter to an unnamed recipient from 19 March 1884. Hooker announces that he has instructed Oliver to send specimens of "Exotic Grasses" to the correspondent and thanks him for contributions to his magnum opus, "Genera Plantarum": "It will give me great pleasure to contribute to your collection of Exotic Grasses, I have instructed Prof. Oliver accordingly. You have laid us under great obligations in the aid you have given us in respect of the Genera Plantarum. Your offer of specimens of [.] Transylvanian Grasses is most welcome [.] but I must beg you to wait till we have sent you some contributions from Kew." The correspondent had inquired about Hooker's famous collaborator George Bentham (1800-84), to which he responds: "You will have been gratified by hearing before this that my venerable coadjutor, Mr Bentham is alive & working hard at the Lilianae for 'Gen. Plant.' He has not been well of late, & I wish that his bodily health was as good as his altogether unimpaired faculties of sight, analysis, memory & judgement! These at 82 are quite wonderful & show no sign of change. A troublesome cough has weakened him a good deal [.]". Bentham, who late in his life had been "converted" to Darwinism by his young colleague Hooker and who co-authored the "Genera Plantarum", died in September that year. - In the final letter of the collection, an aged Hooker thanks his correspondent for two specimens of the genus Impatiens and criticizes the quality of some specimens from the collection of the Austrian hortologist Carl von Hügel: "The two species of Impatiens have arrived & I have examined & named them [.] I have examined & named, as far as I can, all the Asiatic species [.] which I have delayed returning until the plates of several species are completed for the forthcoming Part of 'Hooker's Icones Plantarum' in which they will appear. I have sorted the species according the countries which they inhabit. There are some undescribed species in Baron Hugel's collection but without habitats & the specimens being very poor I think it better not to name them [.]". Carl von Hügel (1795-1870) was a diplomat, botanist and explorer who wrote a famous account of his travels in Northern India, introduced many Australian plants to Europe and was the founder of the Imperial Horticultural Society in Vienna. - The undated note that can be attributed to William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865), father of Joseph Dalton and first director at Kew from 1841 onwards, concerns the identification of an orchid: "I am unacquainted with this plant. It may be Rchb's Sobralia Bletia [.]. At all events it is not S. fragrans - which differs in size & the appendages of the column which in S. fragrans are short blunt and not fringed. I take for granted that the leaves are not hairy beneath as the drawing does not indicate them. If they are you had better look to S. Galeotti [.]". - David Oliver's letter from 12 July 1876 to an unnamed friend and colleague concerns the difficult identification of plants and includes two sketches. In closing, Oliver also mentions Joseph Dalton Hooker's intention to marry his second wife Lady Hyacinth Jardine, daughter of William Samuel Symonds: "Entre-nous [.] our good Chief J Hooker intends to marry Lady Jardine [.]". Hooker and Jardine did indeed marry that year. - Two of Hooker's letters on stationery with embossed letterhead of the Royal Gardens at Kew. The letter from 1909 with letterhead of Hooker's private residence "The Camp, near Sunningdale". Traces of folds. Minor browning and minimal stains. With collector's notes in pencil. - The note by William Jackson Hooker on stationery with stamp of the "Horticultural Society 21, Regent Street". With staple holes and collector's note in pencil. - The letter from Oliver on stationery with embossed letterhead of the Royal Gardens at Kew. Somewhat stained.
